Description
Another one from the Women's march on Saturday. The gentleman pictured here is a PhD who taught biology & environmental science for many years & now is the leader of a local group (of which I am a member) called SOCAN (Southern Oregon Climate Action Now):
"Southern Oregon Climate Action Now is a grassroots, volunteer, non-profit organization of area residents who care about climate change and have joined forces to take bold action against it. Through volunteer projects, we focus on reducing the impacts of Global Warming across Southern Oregon."
Aside from the demonization of particular ethnic groups & religions, what I find disturbing about those who have recently come into power in the U.S. is their demonization of scientists, artists, journalists, intellectuals (THINKERS!) & the glorification of rich businessmen & generals. Nothing against businessmen & generals - they fulfill a role in society too - but this situation is not healthy for any society...

Powerful image with a powerful message on this man's hat. Make America THINK again! (It rings true for the world!) You have managed to capture the passion / determination on this man's face. Great work Claude.

Think! While it's still legal!

It seems most despotic regimes begin with getting rid of the intellectuals. Getting rid of your brains is always, always, always, a bad sign.

picking up where I left off...this was a wonderful shot of all it has to say: I love the guy in profile, I love his hat---the same color as DTrump's hat! (Bravo to the designers)---and I love the people in the background, and the diagonal of the front sign: "Equality" I assume. That diagonal is a great counter accent. But the centerpiece -is the message on that hat. Love it. Terrific shot.
Yes, you're so right, it's the intellectuals, artists and scientists who are the first to be shut up, in fascist-leaning states. You must know, I'm sure, of the 'gag' orders that Trump has just issued to the EPA, and to other scientists in the government: Ie, to keep any 'interference' away from his message. (Which is so damned regressive!) You'll appreciate this greatly: When I was in grad school, a bunch of scientists had a conference about environment---this was the 70s. And one of the scientists, when asked if we should take environmental issues 'seriously', leaned forward and said: "People? These are serious fucking cards here!" And that was the 70s. It's just stunning how many STILL think environmental issues are 'hoaxes', in 2017. Just stunning.
Finally, I have a friend who's a trump supporter: He's got one of the deepest hearts of anyone I know, he helps people on the street, reaches out to people in public places, would give you the shirt off his back. But he's adamant about Trump. And he considers environmental concerns a 'ploy', an intellectual ploy. I finally asked him: "Have you ever met a scientist? Have you seen what they do?" He hadn't. And I explained that these researchers can spend 30 years on one single topic: Certain types of land transformations in Greenland; the way increasing heat effects water tables in a basin of the Midwest. Years on just that. They're patient, slow, and deliberate; and they compare their findings with researchers around the world; and, slowly, they build a consensus, an overview: And these are the core upon which we base so much of the environmental movement. What was so upsetting is that he didn't care. He didn't 'get' it. He just thought it was so much academic hocus-pocus. Then I compared science to artistic disciplines; but, to him, artistic disciplines were just easy 'messing around'. (I think of the time and energy you put in to one single photo: Is that just "messing around"? Maybe in one way, but it's very committed and dedicated work. And that's just one work.) I'm working on this person...But if he thinks it's all a hoax, what about the people who don't have his heart? It's very discouraging. Anyway, this was a great series, and I hope you'll do it anytime you're called to. (You even prompted me to do a post! Much less pointed than yours, but at least I did something. Believe me, in person, I'm much more bold. I just shy away from it online...but I'll get past it...fine image.)
