Description

Built in 1870, Her Majesty's Victorian ship Cerberus is the only remaining Breastwork Monitor class warship left in the world. She was the first of the modern Battleships, and was the flagship and most powerful warship of the Victorian Navy. In addition it was the most powerful warship of any of the Australian Colonial Navies. She rests at Black Rock near where I live, where she was scuttled to make a breakwater in 1926. Taken this afternoon. Best viewed zoomed. imagebam.com imagebam.com

Comparing your bottom thumb you can make out the main parts, must have been very well built. Great shot.

Great image! I love light rays which are formed through the clouds. I see that is a refuge for many birds.I guess that also is helpful for much marine life.

Still ruling the waves -- even from retirement. Hmmm. Wonder there are preservation / restoration stirrings afoot. The most fascinating aspect of some of the Victorian Era warships was that the dang things could even float! This design is quite sane.

Oh, I like this. I have known for years about the first monitor built for use in the US Civil War and I have my Great Grandfather's Photographic History of the Civil War (10 volumes published in 1911)...in which are pictures of the two turret monitors used later in the war, particularly on the Mississippi River. Your wreck was built a scant five years after the conclusion of the Civil War here...fascinating.

A beautiful sky to show off the remains of the Cerberus. I hope that you can dive in and around it! I see that the birds like it.
