I put my earphones in, Switch on the machine, sparking music into life. So many tunes from people I will never meet, How do they manage to describe my mood so well? I open the door of my home, And step out of my comfort zone into the space beyond. Listening to the compilation I have made for myself, Sounds to strengthen myself against the outside world. The voices in my ears, Help to keep me from running back inside. Help me hold my head up high and tell the world, You can’t crush me any more, I take the power back. My music helps to keep me sane, A song for every mood that I will ever feel. Songs to ease the tears from my eyes when sadness falls, Lance the abscess of pain that threatens to poison me. Songs to show me that the world can be a better place, And songs to help me kick its arse when it fails to deliver. Songs about love that I fear I will not know again, And songs that remind me of the one I loved and lost. I wonder if these people knew when they wrote the songs, How much this small, insignificant person would be affected by them? I don’t suppose they will ever realise just how much I appreciate their art, These tunes that make up the soundtrack to my life.
