Hi, Chimera46. As I understand it, the idea was to help keep people on their natural rhythms by simulating a day/night cycle. As I don't think anyone had even heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder in the 1960s, where light plays a powerful role, I'd say it was a pretty good guess on someone's part. Thank you for the lovely comments, all of you.
