Description

Soon after the church was abandoned in 1848 the roof was removed and local settlers used the original timber for construction elsewhere. It was replaced in 1921, but the nave was exposed to the elements for over sixty years and the damage was extensive. I agree with Faemike. Unfortunately mankind has long stripped unused buildings of useful materials to fabricate new structures. Glad they decided to put a roof back over the nave.

This is much like Mission San Juan Capistrano outside San Antonio. Same long, narrow, high room. When we were there, Lucinda and I climbed the stairs to the choir loft. I took pictures of the bell pulls, but we didn't have the nerve to ring the bells! I should post a picture of the bell pulls and call it "Temptation." LOL! However, we did sing a little bit of Ave Maria from the loft, and the acoustics were absolutely amazing.

It's fascinating to see basically that same room, in a wholly different condition.
