Description

Prologue If there is any justice left in the world, then this will be the last that I write. A confession, if you will. I have done many things in my life, good and bad, but it’s for the bad things that I have found my life worth living, and, as such, I have pursued a course both self destructive and harmful to those around me. I have lived for ME, and only me, done what I wanted and got whatever I desired, no matter the cost. Of course, it was not always that way. My childhood was happy, filled with the love and attention of good, honest, hardworking parents, and I grew up knowing the value of a hard day’s work and right from wrong, but later events and chance meeting sent my life spiraling to the depths in which I now find myself. I had a job, a good job, as an investigative writer that led me to places I dreamed of as a child, and in my early adult life, it was enough. It paid the bills and kept me busy, but I gave it all away one day in August ten years ago. I had my reasons, none of them proper, but life’s funny that way. One day you’re content, and the next you want everything that only others have. So, I took it all. Only now, at the age of forty five, do those lessons that my parents ground into my young mind once more hold any sway over my actions. Only now do I find myself needing to make some kind of restitution. And here I sit, the evening gloom feebly held at bay by a solitary candle, writing my final confession. My pistol lies on the desk near my left hand, the dull metal burnished by the candle light, my last remaining companion in these dark times. I keep it near, not for protection (I am so far beyond that now), not to do myself harm (although I have considered it many times), but as a reminder of the finality of the things I have done. I have used it three times in my life, the last of which I do not regret. But, I get ahead of myself. If this is to be my confession, it must detail all, right from the beginning. Not MY beginning, but the start of the events that have so scarred my existence. And it starts with her… She was beautiful, the kind of woman you only saw on the cover of pulp fiction novels…

Now this is really of to a good start! I really like the inner-narrative perspective, it really has that classic Film Noir type of feel. I like the direction your going with this. The fountain pen and choice of weapon would seem to indicate a 1920's - 1940's era; a very classy time period.

I missed this intro the first time around and it just adds spice to what I've read in your first two installments. Excellent.
