Description

Hi everyone... This image has a bit of a story. At the beginning, I just wanted to model a teddy bear. Then, I saw the beautiful fractal by Vivian (Tresamie), "In The Pink, And Blue", and immediately asked her permission to use it, like I did many times in the past with her works. But her work is - as usual - so gorgeous that I felt compelled to build a whole room around it. At the beginning I wanted to do a baby's room, then I had some fun modeling teenage things like the skateboard, and littlekiddie things like the tin duck... and it dawned on me: there is a time, in our life, when we're just suspended between childhood and the first puberal hormonic storms, and I think there has been a month or two, in the life of everyone of us, in which our room depicted just that. The Age of Transition. Child toys along with the first film posters, the Muppet Show along with the first serious novels and books... and so on. So, I ended trying to render just that. And, of course, the teddy bear (name's Fluffy, hence the lettercubes) was the worst model of the whole bunch :) [but, hey, that duck! I just love it... I think it will return in some future images]. At the end, 10 days of pure fun in my discover of XSI, and this is just why 3D is so wonderful to me. Almost like writing. And now some bits-and-pieces for those among you who had the good heart to read so far, LOL. The wonderful fractal on the wall, of course, is by Vivian (if you still don't know her works, check her gallery, she goes here under the name "tresamie", and after you've been there I bet you'll owe me a favor). But also the cover of the big book on the far table is another Tresamie's fractal. The books on the shelves (they're far, I know), are Stephen King, Patrick McGrath, Janet Taylor Lisle and my personal clone of Sophie Kinsella. On the bedstand, near the lamp... er, that is my last published novel :). The skateboard graffiti is a photo taken by my brother in New York a couple of weeks ago that I cropped, skewed and adjusted in Photoshop (I thought that "believe in yourself" was too cool for a kid's skateboard, LOL). Plus, here and there you can find many things I really love: Spider-Man, the Muppets, the Magic Roundabout, Pixar's and Dreamworks' 3D movies and so on. I modeled from scratch everything you can see, I mean every single object, because I desperately need to practice and develop some sort of skills (the only exception is the plant, an old model I made with Maya PaintFX a couple of years ago). Some wonderful reference pictures (for free!) I found at www.afterimage.com - go take a look, it's incredibly useful. Plus, I fell in love with Dosch Industrial Design Textures (what a gift, thanks Anna!), which are used throughout the whole image. The floor texture is by (the Great) Lemog, some other textures are taken from "World Matters" DVD by SubDimension Studios. The child drawings on the walls are from the web... artists anonymous, alas! Done. I wonder if you're still reading, LOL. If you are, hey, thank you for your patience and... one last thing :) This was mostly an exercise in modeling and lighting. Tear it apart, please. I used an infinite light for the sun (with cookies to simulate the windows), 5 no-shadow bluish fill spots for the skylight around the room, one exclusive spotlight to "glue" to the ground some objects which were desperately floating (ball, skateboard, duck, letterD etc). Rendered with Global Illumination with 250K photons with very low intensity and very high accuracy, it took 50 minutes to come out as you see it: no postwork or compositing. Now I'll go, before someone begins to throw me things. :) Have a wonderful week, and really thanks a lot for passing by. Critical comments preferred. Yours Truly, Stefano

Glad you are posting in the galleries again. I don't think anyone will tear it apart:) It's a great image, but I will admit that I think your C4D creations are the greatest and I hope you will make more. - Brian

Wow! An amazing feat of modelling! I love all the small things, the doorknob, the drawer knobs, the reading lamp, the electrical outlets (European style) and light switch. The duck rocks! I recognized 'Ruggine' instantly :). Thanks for using my fractal so brilliantly! Your lighting is impeccable as always.

Wonderful image and the thought/detail (and effort) in it is great. Last published novel (do tell!) The only issue I have is the bed does not seem to be casting a shadow on the floor. And the shadows cast by the widow light on the wall do not match the other objects in the scene. Drop me an IM to discuss if you want.

I do remember this time in my life and I love the way you've depicted it. My only crit would be the lack of shadow under the bed and that the door looks kind of strange, not entirely sure why but it seems somehow disconected from it's surroundings. Other than these little things it is a lovely image, a beautiful memory of earlier ages. 8)
