Description

Britain is chock a block with these. It's ironic that they started out as cottages for poor peasants and now only the rich can afford to buy and maintain them! They look lovely though - especially when the thatch is nice and new like on this one. I took the photo through the windscreen of my friend's car as we were approaching it, which is why it's a bit blurry in places!

Cottage? That's a big house! There are quite a few in southern Sweden, though the cost of thatching, the time it takes and the rarety of good thatchers have many of them going over to shingles instead. The culture museum in Lund has a few thatched buildings. I saw one being re-thatched. Intricate work which took a long time. But, when finished, they are just as water tight as shingle roofs.

Lovely to look at, horrendous to insure. And who would want to live that close to a road?!

A maintenance nightmare, but yes they are very cool!
