Description

These three contridtory concepts form the principals of Orwell's Ingsoc, or English Socialism. They require one to instinctively grasp the idea of Doublethink! Even though 1984 is fiction, some of the themes are occuring nowdays, think of the war in Afganistan, the errosion of privacy and the communalism that is arising! model is katlovestock (DA)

It's getting far worse than even Orwell envisioned in his prophetic works. News of a hyper-secret NSA facility in Idaho which embodies TIA (Total Information Awareness) without the approval of the public or our lawmakers has been built and now the AG has codified an approach which completely tramples whatever was left of the Constitution of the United States. See the EFF page about the new "Counter-Terrorism" directives. Oh, and for the record, they haven't caught many terrorists with any of this but they are sure using it to spy on all the rest of us.

Philip Zimbardo's, Lucifer Effect is pretty chilling in its thesis about how ordinary individuals can be subject to social influence. Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow. describes how people can forget their prior beliefs when they "change their minds". Susan Cain in Quiet quotes from a study by Gregory Burns where not just beliefs are affected by external influence, but perceptions as well. Doublethink, alas, is alive and well, our minds turned into conceputal blenders through our abiity to be manipulated. Maybe we need Meta think to bring ourselves out of it...the psychologist in me taking over. Powerful art work. Love the figure!
