Description

Visited the Grays Harbor Lighthouse yesterday. This lighthouse is also commonly known as the Westport Lighthouse. Take your pick:) The light was commissioned in 1898 and originally sat 400 feet (122m) from the high tide line. Today it sits 3000 (914m) feet from the high tide line...no, the lighhouse didn't move during the last 114 years, that much additional sand has accreted onto the beach due to breakwaters being constructed at the mouth of nearby Grays Harbor in about 1900. The lighthouse is 107 feet (33m) tall and the focal plane of its Fresnel lens is 124 feet (38m) above sea level. We climbed the 135 steps to the top and got to inspect the lens and look out in all directions... Bill P.S. Here's the Lighthouse Wiki for this lighthouse. So long as the ships can still see it I guess. Amazing how things change over the years. A great capture of this lovely lighthouse.

At first I thought it might have gotten pushed by the tides ;} If nature is going to keep adding to the land, maybe the lighthouse should be mounted on a float and tethered to the shoreline, so it can keep up with the changes! It's a beautiful lighthouse, and I've never been inside even one, so I'm envious of you two getting to tour so many; wonderful capture!

Beautiful lighthouse, I love the color contrast here. One of the things I love about photography is the exercise it provides and you are having so much fun taking pictures that you don't even notice until later that night or the next morning. :) nice work.

pristine and clear, bill, vivid and all-present. And somehow gentle too. The last part I can't explain---maybe it has to do with your composition, or that all the hues are in balance somehow, or that you make your 'central image' feel friendly. I don't know. But I've realized, over the time I've known your work, that you do that alot: ie, make even bold shots feel gentle, in balance, and inviting. (Someone else might have made this seem domineering, for example. Here, it belongs in the whole landscape.) The sides of the tower are different versions of white, and each seems clean as can be (notwithstanding the shadows). The housing and roofs and even the flag are so basic and clear. And the sky is a clear daytime blue. And I mean, you give some branches and leaves in both upper corners, which is a fine framing...It's just all there, clear as can be, and very inviting. That might sound pretty basic, but one can go through hundreds of shots and not get those qualities so cleanly. It's a "bill" shot in that way, even if it's a more modest capture, ie not monumental like those fortresses or those deep rain forests. I just plain love its clarity and cleanness. I like the road on the left too, btw...A bold and inviting shot of a beautiful old structure...
