Description

Tracks to nowhere, ?? a line never completed,?? did someone in head office screw up.?? Hardly the case here. This is better known as a " stub " switch or derailing switch. In the background you will see several car sitting in a small classification yard ready to be picked up and taken to their destinations. The track leading from yard is the same track that is part of the belt line tat runs through and around the city and you will also notice to that there is a slight incline downward in the track. In a " classification " yard the purpose is to drop cars there so freights coming through that yard can pick the cars up or if need be drop empty cars used in industry. Cars at times are " shunted ' by the crews, the engine moves to them the coupler open and pushes them a short distance down an allotted track to where other cars are to only be recoupled with them.Through human error the switch leading to the belt line could have been left open perhaps and if the car was accidentily shunted onto the outgoing track the car would have continued unabated down the track, free wheeling as it picked up speed on the downward track crossing several main roads in its journey and very well may have ended up smashing into another train coming up the track or careened into some siding creating further havoc. Ergo the " stub switch " allowing the car to run off the tack at a slower speed perhaps breaking a truck and coupler considerably less damage and money that what it could be if it did get loose........thanks for the peek.
