This is a follow-up scene to my original Spherical Anthology render, which explored many different basic tessellations of surface topology on a sphere, as part of an exercise in hyperbolic geometry design.
In this scene, which I've themed for the Christmas holiday, obviously, I went a few steps further in the topology re-meshing, and pattern-finding techniques in the polygonal manifolds. All of the surface patterns you see on each sphere in this scene are actually modeled into the geometry from the underlying surface polygons; as in the first edition, I took no liberties or shortcuts using displacement or opacity map tricks. It's all done through surface-modeling subdivision techniques, and re-topology of the original icosahedron geosphere primitive. The patterns are found within the underlying polygonal tessellations, and through various surface modeling operations, like polygon extrusions, bevels, inset, and edge cutting procedures, some of the distinct and beautiful repeating patterns are revealed.
Everything in this scene was modeled from scratch. The tree was done using a really great technique I found in a tutorial online, but I don't have it bookmarked or I would link to it here. I'll have to see if I can find it again.
Total modeling time was about 60+ hours, most of which was spent finding the best patterns in the surface mesh, which are then selected by polygon, and manipulated through modifiers or Graphite modeling tools. Render took about 2 hours in Octane render using PMC kernel. Hope you enjoy.

... and now I am thinking, why can't we have Christmas decorations look like this? Manufactures take note - this is brill! I don't like 'gaudy bling', the stuff you usually find in all sorts of department stores - maybe there is a niche? it may work out more expensive than it is normal, but I would spend rather more for quality! where was I? - oh yes, zoomed-in, they appear to me like snowflake patterns, simply elegant and sensational in my books, BB
