Description
In 1967, the very first Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) has been found on Madeira, near Monte.
As Speckled Woods are no strong flyers, they were for sure blown from Portugal to Madeira by storms.
Since 1976 this species is seen commonly in agricultural areas and in sunny eucalyptus- and pine forests, rather rarely in Laurel Forests.

Bravo Michel a lovely capture of this male Speckled Wood I do understand Andrea thinking it to be a Wall brown and the female speckled wood is quite different. The Wall is very similar but has a dark band down the middle of the top wing.

I bet they are beautiful in the fields during mating season. Swarms of lovely, buttery wings, flitting from place to place. This is a stunningly warm and wonderful shot.

I do understand now that identification of this butterfly is difficult… Thanks to Andrea (durleybeachbump) for sending me good links about the two species in discussion here: the Wall Brown:

And thanks to Danny (danob for his expert comment ! My information is coming from page 151 of Peter Sziemer’s book Madeira Natural History in a Nutshell: 
Although the Wall Brown is not mentioned anywhere in this most authoritative reference book (as in the table about Butterflies of the Madeira Archipelago page 153) , and if the illustration on the British Butterfly Conservation site is correct, I now admit that Andrea is right ! And now trying to find Dr. Sziemer’s e-mail…. :~)
