Description

Hi everyone! Back I am, after some further tinkering with XSI. Lot of experimenting in this one - even with my modeling skills (huh? someone just said "skills"?) that nonetheless remains very poor, as you can see. I'm desperately trying to get my hands on the almost infinite possibilities of the RenderTree to build some shaders from scratch (the cheese, the glasses, the slice of pie, the wood). Plus a lot of fun with the lights. For those interested, there are 5 of them in the scene. One spot on the back, another on the side, projecting area shadows (these two I made selective, taking out of the computation the glass objects). Plus, a light-box simulating a window on the right and a yellowish filler to fake global illumination near the curtain. The fifth is another selective spot, this time set to illuminate only the glass objects, and it's the only one light that emits photons, in order to reduce the rendertime calculating caustics. Those caustics above suck, I know... with time I'll learn how to create them properly, it's a promise. This will be an endless discovery, I think :) Thanks a lot for all the "welcomebacks" I received in the past two weeks, I really appreciated... it's incredibly good to be "in the Family" again :) Walls material is from "World Matters" DVD by SubDimension Studios. My thanks (and full credit) again to Brandon Brice. Glad you passed by and, of course, any comment (and specially any criticism) is more than welcome. May Your Renders Be Short. Stefano :)

I think your modelling skills are very good, even if you think they are not. Great play of light and shadows and nice composition.

I really like the lighting in this and the light through the glass especially. Top marks. So glad you're posting again. And thanks for the comments. I agree with you, which is probably why i redid the scene within a few hours.

Yes indeed the light/shadow play is most excellent in this image. If I know you... the level of modeling skill, (yes I said SKILL 8) ) and shader building will only get better and better. Your modeling skills at the moment are great already as far as I am concerned. My only crit would be that the apples almost look as if they are floating. A sleight shadow on the table cloth by the bottom of the apples would help with the floating feeling... I think anyway. Maybe it is just me too. Nice work man!!!!

aw cool, that's my Doublecrash! great to see your art and read your comments! Same as Swade, I noticed the shadows under the apples, but the folds in the cloth and fungus in the cheese, WOW!

Very glad to see you posting again. I am afraid I have some issues with my perception/interpretation of the lighting here. The objects on the table seem to be casting/not casting shadows in a rather disconcerting manner. Some shadows seem to go to the right with the main light (window). Some seem to go back and to left. Some items seem to be not at all. If I might make a suggestion, turn off all lights except the main. Then once you are happy with that, start to add your low level non-shadow casting fills, one by one. Be careful though, not to conflict too visibly with the main light theme. As a personal preference, I would try to avoid having two competing main light sources unless you can see them explicitly. Multiple shadows just raise questions for me and create a sense of dis-unity in the image. I fully expect that as you get back into the swing of things and deeper into the software, you will be amazing me again as you once did with C4D.

Hi folks, thanks a lot for your comments. As I specified in my comment's preference, I'm searching for criticism to improve, so big thanks to Incarnadine, Swade and Jim: you all are right, the shadows are a bit confusing and the apples are floating. I decided not to add any shadows in Photoshop but going out with the pure render in order to take suggestions :) I still have to enter the realm of the differend render-passes, in which these things could be fixed directly in XSI. As far as composition goes, I like the light coming from all sides, but I'm not so happy of the result in this specific image. Thanks again for all your feedback after all this time :)
