Description

Sea Turtle Ancient soul You carry the gift of longevity The energy of patience And the spirit of serendipity You teach me to move slowly With the wisdom of knowing All things come with divine timing You show me how to carry a spirit shield To armor myself against negative energies To retreat when I must To gather inner wisdom So I can emerge and move forward With newfound strength Your message is to surrender To the whimsical journey of life To let the currents carry me Where I must go To enjoy the adventure Knowing I will find the answers and peace I seek from deep inside As I travel my own journey of the spirit Following intuition Opening up to the world of the imagination And serendipity Where magic and miracles are possible. Hard to just choose 2 images, but I'll do my best. Both your turtle paintings are tremendous. This one shows so much flowing detail in the turtle, you've not only articulated each individual island of hue on the turtle, and all the rivers between them, but also his water-like flows of shapes as well---ie, on his neck and upper torso and on his limbs. You've let the rush of water transform his upper limbs by making their lines whoosh by us in great rushes of energy. It's as if his very body is being transformed by his environment, even as he transforms it.

You're making spiritual swirls out of rivulets of skin. A different way of creating that energy from using hairs or feathers, etc. Yet it still creates those rivers of spiritual energy. And he juts into the picture from the right, cleaving the tranquil waters and making them explode in bubbles and heaves and thick-glass-like reflections and refractions. The upper part of your painting looks a little like those thick glass bricks you see on the corners of doctors' offices. (Not too attractive, lol, but very expressive here!) I love the free energies of your brushstrokes. I have no idea how you create such visceral brushstrokes in Photoshop, but it's no matter: You do. Your whites and purples, on top, against those blues, make a rushing-whooshing feeling as the bubbles create little rectangles of air which gurgle up to the sky. And the bubbles are like planets. In fact, all the water is split asunder and turned into a crystal-cool cauldron by the turtle's sheer presence, as he lunges heavily through these waters. He's all tranquility, but his tranquility sets of explosions of light and energy. That's power!

Your poem evokes the power and silence and slowness of the turtle beautifully. And what it teaches us about nurturing the same inside of us. You use very sweet techniques too, the music of your words. And the thing is, with your words' lessons of learning from the sureness and eternal slowness of the beast, his presence is actually explosive. It creates a freshness which transforms the waters into a big gurgling ballet. For a creature who radiates slowness, he has an explosive presence, in other words, showing that still waters don't just run deep, they transform the world. I'm repeating myself, lol, but it just hits me so hard with this painting. A beautiful evocation of the power of such a creature, with a wonderful use of colors and shapes and energies to convey that power. It really does bring home how such a creature changes everything the second it appears. A music critic once used the phrase---of the inward slow movements of late Beethoven---"divinity in motion": Ie, something that doesn't move because all motion is contained inside it. He's saying, "imagine that, MOVING". That's how this feels to me: Stillness and slowness, moving. It's explosive. Because what a fresh energy he releases...Terrific. I love it, Carol.

Thanks so much for your very wise and insightful comment, Mark. 'A big gurgling ballet'. Oh, I like that. As I got into this piece, the colors and textures kept taking me unexpected places that kept inspiring me to do more exploring. The iridescent colors and shapes were truly dancing in my head as I worked, not unlike a 'ballet'. Though I didn't know it until I read your words. It was a slow adventure and discovery, not unlike the turtle, and I became more intrigued with what I would discover next, rather than focusing on the end of the journey. The sea turtle energy is serendipity, and this, for me, was an occurrence of events ending in a happy way.
