Description

In a "what if" scenario, a flight of Horten Ho-229 Nachtjager fighters are scrambled to engage enemy bombers. I figured that in an alternate history, having learned a lesson from the vulnerability of Me-262's when taking off and landing, the Luftwaffe might deploy the (hopefully improved a bit) Bachem Natter (Adder) guided and manned interceptor rocket to protect their sensitive advanced aircraft from intrepid enemy fighters. In real time, the Ho-229 was in development very late in the war and never made it past a spotty test flight history. It did, however, show some real promise. The Bachem Ba-349's were actually flight tested a number of times, towed or dropped from He-111's. The only vertical launch test nearly ended the life of the test pilot. Although sometimes classified as a suicide vehicle, the Natter was meant to be launched, guided to the enemy bombers when the pilot would take over and fire it's rockets at the intended target; and then glide down to level flight where the pilot would be able to "eject" in a rather chancy technique. Of course, the war ended both projects prematurely for the Germans. Ho-229 Nachjager: RP publishing here on Rendo. I'm with 'woody', very cool....if frightening ' what if '. I like the idea of the Natter defence force, it may actually have worked, given enough development and enough Natters....top drawer Bill....10/10+

So close and so very scary what if! Our little Mustangs and Spitfires etc would have been eaten up alive.. And the bombers! Well.. The raids would have stopped almost over night. So close. Great job Rob
