Description

After spending the morning in Apt we arrived in Roussilon later in the day. The afternoon shadows were a bit of a problem for me in some places because it was a bright and sunny day so there was a lot of contrast. Most of the streets were narrow with houses towering on either side and yet it was a very charming place with many nooks and crannies to explore.

I love this! When I was in France many years back there were several towns like this, and it was hard for me to tear myself away. Beautiful POV in this shot!

Great capture. As in so many old European cities, this means walking!

I've been away a lot, and I've come back this week only to leave a few comments, unfortunately---and that's not easy when you've posted so many beautiful shots here. I hope to back again to do more soon. When you posted this image, I noticed Claude's remark on the Roussilon Red. I'd heard of Roussilon red wine, but I didn't know there was a famous red hue. After looking online, I can see what he was talking about! You got a lot of reds here, and oranges, and slate-oranges, and beige, and blue-greys and so on. A beautiful shot of a narrow passage between buildings, winding up and out of frame...And I love the total white of the sky: It allows the stone and facades to stand out even more. And you have bleaching light on the facades too (on the right) which is in beautiful contrast with all those shadows. I love the 'journey' of this shot, and the grit of the stones and walls. Wonderful seeing, Katherine; and when one zooms full size---whoosh! it really opens up! The steps cascade to us like a waterfall. Wonderful shot, your European images have been wonderful, and they make me want to go there and see these places in person...
