Description

Hey there. Just trying to see how close I can get Rex to appear as though he's scan data of a real human as opposed to being something Darrell and I came up with for Poser. Thoughts are welcome on the overall look/effect.

It reminds me of someone, but I can't place who. I think it looks absolutely custom. Is this just as a personal proof of concept or is it to show off Rex to the general populace? As the former, this is amazing. You have a lot of skill and talent.

Thanks! It's just a proof of concept. I really want to push these characters creatively and show both the folks at work and the folks in the community that they can be amazing if approached a little differently than what we're used to doing. Usually, people create displacement and bump map detail from the diffuse texture, which is the wrong way to go and limits the overall effect. Or they'll use a shader like EZSkin which doesn't take into account the varying sizes and shape of pore detail - nor does it create a lot of the nuances of the skin like blemishes, scars, and fine skin wrinkles. I want folks to get away from those things and focus a bit more on the underlying details that are often overlooked but so critical to making believable looking humans. I don't really do rigging well, we have Darrell for that, but I like to think I handle sculpting and modeling well enough to make the case. Fingers crossed. Who knows, we may see texture sets from SM or other people that start approaching things this way.

Oh and just as an aside - Rex was based loosely off of James G1, Henry Cavill and Brad Pitt in the original sculpt of the figure, which I don't think I ever posted on the net. We then referenced photos, medical diagrams and scan data for the body proportions for both he and Roxie (Roxie's face is mostly based on the actress, Valorie Curry - with a few tweaks so as not to be a direct likeness). Anyway, though my detailing pass in the image above was all freehand thinking, if you are sensing some familiarity in the face, that's why.

Very nice Teyon… look forward to see where you can take this! Hopefully somewhere… certainly provides a lot of inspiration to me, to try some more stuff with Rex's mug in ZBrush...
