...the bark on Coastal Redwood trees is fascinating.
...Jeff (jayfar) commented a couple of days ago that he'd read that the bark serves as fire protection for these mighty trees...
...Right you are Jeff:
"Redwood bark, soft and stringy-fibrous, varies in color from red-brown to grayish. On mature trees it may grow to 60 centimeters (2 feet) in thickness. The thick bark protects the tree from fire damage. Repeated hot fires can burn through the bark, and the tree's core may then rot out. These hollowed-out trees are called goose pens because early settlers kept poultry in them."

When I first moved to Humboldt County, I knew people who LIVED in stumps of these trees--and quite nicely, I might add. Kinda steep, but LOTS of room.

Beautiful photo, Bill. It looks almost like 3 dimensionally grown feathers. And it's nice and soft to the touch. Nice to sit and lean against, as I recall. This photo could have been a very interesting "what is it?" quiz question. The odd little obscure fact makes me wonder - how many lived here so that a hollow trunk can be used for poultry? ANd were the birds alive (like in a tree trunk cage)? Keep up the good work! :-)

Not the color I'm used to seeing on redwoods, but I love bark shots - they're an endless source of fascinating abstract images. I have several in my photo archives (mostly madrone) that I will probably post at some point...

Great photo, wonderful information and always ready to learn something new! Goose pens - why not - I saw an old B&W shot of 20 feet of redwood tree on wheels as a mobil home - I think that I still have it somewhere!
