Description

Poulnabrone Portal Tomb, Co. Clare is one of the most photographed places in Ireland, so needless to say living in Wiltshire for the past 38 years, on and off, this place is fascinating to me. Being of similar in age to Stonehenge some 4000 BC the capstone being 12 foot by 7 feet again wonder how Bronze age man lifted it into place.. The Burren where this forms part of the landscape is very unusual, being full of limestone and rare plants.. It was one of the areas I explored this year and I have many more shots to follow, with a large series of Irish scapes I hope you will enjoy.

I don't think they lifted the capstone, I think they lowered the ground. And no, that's not Irish logic :)

Great capture Danny this sort of thing fascinates me, So looked on wiki lol I see the photo they have shows a chain running around the thing now as though stopping people from getting up close to it.. But Hey they had to have somewhere t shelter from the rain.. lol on seeing different angles I think to that they lowered stones into holes dragged the cap on top then dug the ground away from under it.. well I would of if I had to do this lol..

It just goes to show how ancient people didn't let a little thing like being really heavy to lift stop them from building what they wanted, good shot by the way

I can't wait to see what you photographed, Danny. I will never see my family's home except through your great photography. Actually, I haven't heard of this or seen it before so you introduced me to something very special. Is this made of the blue stone that Stonehenge was made from? I'll have to do more research and learn more about this. Thanks, Danny, for a spectacular and provoking shot.

A magnificent capture of this ancient 'dolmen', as we call it in French ( derived from the Breton language, which means ' stone table'). How lucky you were to visit Co.Clare, one of my favourite regions in Ireland! Superb work, Danny!

Beautiful capture of this old structure; it has such a sense of presence! It just seems so fantastic to me to have these things all around the landscape, we don't have much that old over here.
