Wayyyyy back in 1993 a friend and I dreamt of writing a successful 'adventure' game for the Amiga (back in those days, if you were a serious gamer then Amiga was the computer of choice). Every Tuesday night for two years we slaved away, my friend wrote the coding and I designed the game-play, story and location descriptions as well as pushing the 32 colours of 'Deluxe paint' to the limit for the location paintings. You see, this was all before CD-Rom and our *massive* number of locations (63!) had to fit on only two floppy-disks. Then along came the dreaded CD-Rom and subsequent gaming was so far removed from floppy-disk based games that we abandoned the game forever.... *********************************************** As I will not be able to produce any art for a while I thought I would run a series of these *ancient* images complete with location descriptions. You can ask what you want to examine and where you would like to go from here. At the end of the week I will go with the majority (or most interesting!) of requests. Can you complete the mission?? ********************************************** ********************************************** PHALARIS An original adventure game by Huw Carr ********************************************** ********************************************** The planet Saeros lies in an obscure outer system in the far reaches of Theian space. Little is known of its history or culture as Saeros has until recently ignored invitation to interact with Thea, the centre of a galactic trade alliance consisting of eight civilisations in a close vicinity to Thea's sun, Sol. The golden era of peace emanating from the TTA (Theian Trade Alliance) seems destined to oblivion as Saeros prepares to wage war on the vulnerable human colonies. The problem of propelling large bodies over interstellar distances has been overcome by the Saerali via the 'Phalaris Principle'. Less time and energy consuming than 'stellar skimming' (passing through select points in the wave in which the space-time contineum flows) the Saerali link the point of departure and arrival directly thus enabling the Saerali fleet to materialise unsuspectingly in the orbit of another planet. The only way to prevent invasion is to locate the Phalaris device and destroy it. After several weeks of travel, your small covert vessel 'Sonus Blue' returns to normal space on the dark side of Saeros' moon. Using the information supplied via your only contact on Saeros, you 'rappel' to the surface to begin your mission. You are on a vast plain looking north. The towering form of Starbase stands before you. A path diminishes into the blasted plain to the south. To the west you can just make out some small structures. Rolling, grassy slopes rise in the east and beyond them is a dark smudge of the last ancient forest of Saeros. SOME EXITS ARE - N, S, E, W YOU ARE CARRYING - Nothing

N! Actually, this is quite a bit better than some of the early cd rom game graphics I've seen, especially the clouds. Great idea too, really original use of the gallery :)

the road leading into the starbase looks rather inviting, but i'm tempted to poke around the trees before going in, but most old games i've played havent got alot of stuff outside main locations.. i'll go with W, as my habit is never to enter main game areas until the surroundings are all accounted for lol as haloedrain said: great idea! :)

How amusing this is. I think Ill stick to the same idea that the surroundings always should be examined before you try to visit the most dominating structure. So west it is for me too.

Those were the days when writing a game was within the reach of any programmer with a good idea, and fitting it into a few measly KB of RAM meant you had to be good. My Myst instincts tell me to go charging straight in, Go North.

I'm more interested in forests than towering forms, so I pick west. Can I ask for more information about the towers in the background? Can I look around in the grass by the path?

I bought my son his first Amiga 64 i think it was. I use to watch him play games sometimes. but me im not an expert but i notice that at first the road is quiet clear and than suddenly the monster or what ever it is is there and you have to kill it before you can go on.. so i would go for the long quiet road it is rather unnerving...sorry im not much help a younger audience would do much better cheers

hehe, i remember even before graphics came along in adventure games, and we just played MUDs. the first i ever played was the Infocom game 'Leather Goddesses of Phobos'. i was always fascinated by the sheer amount of preprogrammed answers/possibilities in them. they must have taken a lot of work. as great as CD/DVD roms are these days, theyve done a lot to damage the software industry. back then programmers had to be very efficient with their code to fit it onto as few floppies as possible. now? practically none of the programmers care, since they have pretty much bottomless space. code is much messier and more inefficient now. cheers, -gabriel

Excellent painting and storyline! I love this and would love to share it with my Gameboomer buddies so they could add their two cents worth. I started out as a gamer before finding Bryce :) Soooo...the grass holds monsters that will kill you...don't go there yet. The starbase is too obvious and might hold a transporter and we're not ready for that....I vote for the trees!! Maybe some old unused buildings with technology that will give us a clue to how the Saerali think :)
