Description

I'm going to be busy the next few days so I'll post this one early for Pearl Harbor Day. Keep in mind all the brave men and women who have served or are serving America "in harm's way." The top photo is U.S. Navy issue and currently found in the National Archives. Left to right: The capsized USS Oklahoma was a total loss. In the background is the aft mast and Number 3 turret of the USS Maryland which was damaged in the attack, but repaired and modernized in three months time. The USS West Virginia sank at her moorings, but was raised in May of 1942 and underwent a two year repair and modernization. Behind the background smoke is the USS Tennessee which also was damaged, but repaired and modernized in three months time. On the far right is the aft mast of the USS Arizona, the most disasterous casualty of the attack and a total loss after her forward magazines exploded. My photo of the USS Arizona Memorial doesn't really need an explanation. If you look closely to the right of the dedication at about 4 o'clock you can see the name F.M. Rowell. Frank Rowell was a friend of USS Chicago sailor Jack Adams. I had the privilege of meeting Jack and talking to him about Frank, Pearl Harbor and the Pacific War.

Thanks for posting this as a remembrance to those that were there that day and lost their lives and family members that were left alone, and all involved. I have visited the Memorial and it is incredibly moving to stand there and think of all that went on that day and that day forward. Enjoy your time away my friend. :)

Thank you. I wonder how today's people would react if this had happened today. Let's remember, lest we forget, and make the same mistakes all over again.

A great tribute. The three years I was stationed at Pearl Harbor, I took many visitors to the memorial. I don't think any of them left with dry eyes.

Very nice. I just received some genealogical research my mom had done. I had an uncle at Pearl Harbor. He survived. Not sure what ship, though.

Well said Rog... Found this interesting perspective on my trip to the Arizona Memorial in 1996. Japanese visitors to Hawaii today do not view the events of December 7, 1941 as a triumph for them, but as the beginning of a national tragedy for Japan.

Great tribute Rog. I recently joined the VFW and became a Lifetime member. Most of the members of the post are Vietnam veterans, as I am.
