Description

I was delighted to see the Lone Star Flight Museum's Consolidated PB4Y parked outside the hangar on my last trip to Galveston. I have been watching the progress of the rebuild for many years and this was the first time I could get a full shot of it. This type is a naval version of the B-24 "Liberator" with a single tail. The PB4Y was specifically designed for long range patrols and anti-sub missions. Privateers served in the Pacific 1944-45. This one went on to be a firefighter bomber after its military service. It has been a very long haul to get this plane refurbished back to WWII shape. Parts are scarce and Hurricane Ike didn't help out by flooding the hangar and plane. Here's the Wiki site for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_PB4Y-2_Privateer

Yup.it needs some major repairs to #1 engine maybe more. There is a support under the tail keeping it level as they had a tendency to be tail heavy on the ground.

Wow! Rog, that is an aircraft I have not seen....yet! lol It's looking in great shape now.. Gleaming like new.. This was the plane Churchill's personal transport was based on I believe.... (No, just checked, he used a Liberator partly converted to Privateer standard...) Great shot mate.. Rob

It has the firebomber engine conversion (Hawkins and Powers Aviation) trading in the R1830s for R2600s along with B-25 cowlings. It would be nice if they would put the smaller engines back on it but that would be a huge undertaking for a museum not rolling around in cash. It's good to see they've got the turrets going back on it (I assume they're real). We've got another Privateer here in CA at Yanks air museum - another H&P bomber. It flew in, and I think they're going to try to get it back in the air eventually. Nice shot. :D

Beautiful shot of a rare specimen. Would be nice with interior photos, but I doubt if anyone would let someone else inside. Thanks for all the comments to my gallery the other day. Much appreciated!! Keep up the good work! :)

Oops, missed this several days ago Rog...this is a variant I've either never seen or simply passed over. Glad you have posted it. My knowledge grows every day...to bad I keep forgetting at about the same rate I learn. LOL. Good pic!

@chuter: Thanks for the engine conversion info. You are correct about it being a H&P Aviation modification firebomber. The turrets are the real deal with the ERCO type up front and standard B-24 type in the tail. The museum has two dorsal turrets inside and BOTH of them should fit nicely on top. I appreciate the correction about it having two dorsal turrets in the regular B-24 spot in back of the cockpit and another located at the wing root.

Great shot of this bird. She is in much better shape than ther one I posted last summer that had been put to pasture in Greybull, Wy. She was used for for firefighting!
