Overpowering the Sun - The movie industry has done this for decades. Here's a mid-day photo where my flash was used to overpower the sun. The result looks like an early evening scene. (Had I gone brighter with my flash, and faster shutter speed I could have completely blackened the ambient scene, but then you wouldn't see much except the model's face.)
