Description

I know the next few shots will probably cost some general loss of interest in this series but that's ok because I want those who have been following this trudge to get a sense of the place. This requires a few shots that aren't really pretty but hopefully help put you there. OK? Well here I am standing on the edge of a ledge near the last obstacle to the entrance to Sumula. I had gotten ahead of all of our group except for my Scottish friends and guide, who you saw previously. So I took a few minutes to scramble onto a ledge, overcome my acute sense of vertigo, and look back onto the trail as it broke from the forest. What I admire here is the old Bushka lady looking up at me. I gave her high respect because she was not young, was wearing traditional skirt and scarves but she had the jamn to make the trek to see this universally sacred site. It would not have been fun, at least for me, to hike in a heavy head scarf, long sleeved shirt and long dress. She was also a keen eyed guardian who spotted this westener taking pictures of her flock. She does not look too impressed. It also shows why I love Turkey because you also see here women and girls dressed very western. Though I must admit this is not so common a site in eastern Turkey as compared to the west part. I suspect the Bushka was not happy of me taking pictures of her uncovered girls. By the way, the lady in the blue coat and scarf would be considered to be fashionably dressed in the style of traditional eastern Turkish women. They wear long, but colorful trench coats and brightly colored, patterned head scarves. Even when it is a 100+ F out they still wear these jackets! Being a secular Muslim country that is part of both Europe and Asia, Turkey is a land of huge cultural contrasts. Do not think that all Turkey is as liberal and open as Istanbul and what you see of the cruise ships cities like Ephasis on the Aegean. Eastern Turkey is much more traditional. Ok, sorry, got off topic. It's just a walk in the woods to an ancient sacred site. Let's go!

I love the colors of the fashionably dressed traditional lady, but I think I would suffocate in one of those coats. :) Awesome picture, I love the interesting people!

I love the body language of the Bushka - "What IS that girl doing??" LOL A fun photo, Roxy, and it definitely gives us a feel for the location you were in. You're a great tour guide, my friend. Looking forward to more!

Though somewha arduous, I'm sure it is quite a scenic trek. You are builiding nicely to the first image of the grounds/entrance. It's not a journey if you're suddenly at the end. As Rod said, the body language of the lady is really quite humorous. I'm waiting to see her wag her finger at you. It seems Turkey is now getting a dose of extremism from their leader. Why leaders have to always resort to violence against peaceful protests is beyond me. It's too bad it still exists here in the US, albeit on a lesser scale, e.g. mace and firehose water. It seems some real bullets got mixed in with rubber bullets as well as the heavy use of tear gas during the Turkey protests. Well anyway, this is an enjoyable series of images.

This is a wonderful point of view that shows most of the extent of the group with you (I'm guessing) and some of the scenery. You do have to wonder how they manage in those heavy, hot clothes but I guess they're used to it.

It is a great shot, and from a good vantage point. The woman in the head scarf has an expression I can't read for sure but it makes me wonder hjow she might have looked if it were a man taking the photo. One must tread carefully amid people of other cultures. I think perhaps she might just be tired and appreciating the moment of rest.

I’m glad you posted and agree it gives a better idea of the trek but also the story provides some real insights to the culture and surroundings!!

Such lush greens. A nice contrast to the stone pathway. Istanbul must be facinating as the place where near eastern and european cutures meet sometimes to clash sometimes to merge.
