Description

"Earth is the Cradle of the mind, but one cannot live in the cradle forever." -K. E. Tsiolkovsky, father of Astronautics On July 20th, 1969, as the world watched breathless, and the millions of people involved in one way or another in the project proudly looked on, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins flew the two craft, Columbia and Eagle, that composed Apollo 11, achieving the goal that for centuries epitomized the very definition of the impossible. Collins stayed in orbit in Columbia, while Armstrong and Aldrin landed in Eagle. As we approach the 40th anniversary, my mind has been frequently drawn to those events. I was 12 at the time, but can remember the flight quite vividly. 12 men have walked upon the surface of the moon, barely touching its mysteries and treasure trove of knowledge. I do wonder when humans will return, and just who they will be. This piece is my attempt at commemoration, trying to give some sense of the immensity they faced. I've represented the whole human race here- most on the beautiful blue Earth, and 3 more, set apart from the rest, in 2 fragile, glittering craft, displaced from the rest by a quarter of a million miles. Rendered in Lightwave 8.5. I extensively modified Apollo meshes I downloaded long ago, and retextured them. I built the Earth, and the lunar landscape is a much modified and retextured mesh from NewTek. Thanks for taking a look! -Tom Happy Moon Day!

Wonderful scene! The earth looks fantastic, a deep blue island small against the stars. I was four, so I don't really remember Apollo 11, but 12, 15 and beyond are clear in my mind.

Great composition. Really brings out the loneliness of the scene.

I remember it. I was eleven. You did a good service to the most important step our species has yet taken. Good job.

Wow, I was in Farragut State Park in Idaho at the Boy Scout National Jamboree. I was 14? They set up viewing screens in the community tents. We got to watch it all happen with the rest of the world. That memory is in my top 20. Very cool indeed.

Great composition! Having grown up in Bethpage, Long Island, NY (Home of Grumman at the time, who made the LEM) I have seen the back up version of it. I believe there are only two left. Anyhow, the model is a great representation of it! If you ever make it to Long Island, check out the Cradle of Aviation museum. The LEM plus other great aircraft in there! great space stuff, as always.

Excellent choice for presenting the scene and very well done for all of it. I just remember it happening and everyone gathered about the tv to watch.

Hey Tom, I really like this image but the only thing that I would mention that is not accurate is the color on the Command Capsule. It should be silver not gold. As always your work in outstanding...... Cheers, David
