Description

Mount Baker is listed as one of the five active volcanoes in Washington State. I took this photo from a vantage point only ten miles from where we camp for our summers in the Pacific Northwest. Its last eruption was from September to November 1880...which in geologic terms wasn't very long ago. Volcanism has persisted here for 1.5 million years. The Spanish explorer Gonzalo Lopez de Haro first mapped it in 1790 as the Gran Montana del Carmelo. The British explorer George Vancouver renamed the mountain for 3rd Lieutenant Joseph Baker of HMS Discovery, who saw it on April 30, 1792.

A very beautiful capture of this lovely place. Your area is a bit like New Zealand and you just hope that the mountains stay dormant for the next 100 years. 😄

very beautiful volcano. I am afraid to go close to an active one. I was on the edge of Taal Lake which has the Taal Volcano in the middle. it was smoking. there were small boats there that would take people to the Taal island, but not me. there are people that live there year round farming and fishing

What a spectacular shot, Bill! The depth is just breathtaking!

Every now and then one of them wakes up and lets us know it's still alive...

Great contrast in this shot of the slumbering giant appearing ghostly in the powder blue background.

Nice shot and interesting information. I think a few years ago it had a slight plume escape from its summit. But after the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in May 1980, one never knows. I hope I don't see Mt. Rainier erupt, another of those so-called dormant volcanoes. But as you point out, 100, or even 200 years in geologic times is nothing.

Given that we have very few active volcanoes in Chicago (2, 3 tops), it's always a thrill to know that the mountain I'm looking at is one of them. One wouldn't know, to just look. A beautiful shot for its mix of heavy darks in the foreground with apparition-like peaks in the background. With a mediary layer or two, in between. Wonderful contrasts. And the whites on that peak really stand out, even though they're ghost-like. Majestic and mysterious. You two have seen such incredible nature!
