Description

Captured Father's Day, 2014; a salute to my fellow veterans, and dedicated to those, both male and female, living and dead, who served in the armed forces of the United States. Launched on 27 August 1942, the Battleship USS Iowa, shown here, and a veteran in its own right, served with distinction and valor during both the World War II and Korean conflicts, and is now decommissioned and permanently anchored on 9 June 2012 in Berth 87 in the Los Angeles World Cruise Port Terminal at the LA Waterfront/Port of Los Angeles. It is often referred to as a museum. ------------------------------------ USS Iowa‍ 's main battery consists of nine 16" (406.4mm)/50 caliber Mark 7 guns, which could fire 2,700 lb (1,200 kg) armor-piercing shells 20 nmi (23 mi; 37 km). Her secondary battery consisted of twenty 5 in (130 mm)/38 cal guns in twin mounts, which could fire at targets up to 12 nmi (14 mi; 22 km) away. With the advent of air power and the need to gain and maintain air superiority came a need to protect the growing fleet of Allied aircraft carriers; to this end, Iowa was fitted with an array of Oerlikon 20 mm and Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft guns to defend Allied carriers from enemy airstrikes. Thanks a LOAD for this post! It's about as close I'll ever get to an Iowa class BB in this life. I've been on the USS Alabama. Formidable ships! Served very well, even in our time. And remember all who served on them. A fitting tribute and memory. Keep up the good work!

PS - do you have more photos of her, please post!

Thank you for this memorial, Harry, it's a sterling picture, and with nobility and beauty alike. And I honor all you did in service, and all you went through, and all that everyone else went through as well. (I just posted a small piece for this big day, myself; but I can only quote others; I was never there, not even a little.) I wanted to come here personally and thank you. I'll be back for your other uploads later, but I knew you'd remember Veterans Day, and I wanted to come here and thank you. It's a beautiful vivid capture; and, above all, thank for your service and all you went through and saw. I am, and will always be, eternally grateful...

As a child I think I spent half my life crawling around the USS North Carolina. I had to wait nearly forty years for them to finish the front half so I could see that part. Wonderful dedication to all service members everywhere.
