Description
A handsome meerkat, ever on the alert, shown intently scanning its habitat and beyond.
Captured back on 3/13/10, at the beautiful Griffith Park/Los Angeles Zoo in Los Angeles, California.
The meerkat or suricate (Suricata suricatta) is a small carnivoran belonging to the mongoose family (Herpestidae). It is the only member of the genus Suricata. Meerkats live in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola, and in South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang" or "clan". A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats, but some super-families have 50 or more members. In captivity, meerkats have an average life span of 12–14 years, and about half that in the wild.

I could watch these little guys all day. Love them and love your shot, Harry!

Delightful...like wolfenshire says, he's on guard...though, to me, he looks like a comic character who's showing his teeth, like an old Ed Wynn clown...just delightful, standing erect, looking in the distance like he were posing for a family portrait (ie, "that's uncle Ed---he's a little eccentric, and he thinks he's reeeeeeallllly noble, but between you and me, he's a little nuts...") I love the look you captured, with his front legs down flat, and that loopy smile. And solid composition too, with bathing light. A real delight, Harry.

One of my favourite little critters! I love these guys, and I always think they'll be bigger than they really are when I see them in person. Wonderful pose you've captured, Harry!
