Description

Large View is MUCH better. Please look at the full view. This is a slightly updated contest entry for the "Reinvented Myth" contest at the Aery Soul Forum. The original entry was a Third Place winner. Hopefully, this is an improvement over the original :). Story: Odin, the Father of Gods in Scandinavian mythology, sacrificed himself to himself in order to gain wisdom (including the secret of the runes) and spent nine days and nights hanging on Yggdrasil, the World Tree, pierced with his own spear. I thought of another character who spent some days stuck on a pole, and who also quested to gain wisdom - Scarecrow from Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz". Moreover, while Scarecrow is obviously associated with crows, Odin is associated with ravens: his two ravens, Hugin and Munin, usually perch on his shoulders. So here is the border between two worlds: the sunny and bright and cheerful land of Oz, and the gloomy and sinister world of Viking myths, with Dorothy meeting Odin as Scarecrow. Credits: Software used: Carrara and Gimp. 3D: Environment: Heavily modified Country Lane Hedgerow for Carrara with elements from Maple Meadows and World Gardens Japan, all by HowieFarkes, all very much modified -- retextured, morphed using my own morphs, rearranged, etc. Dorothy: Aiko3 with custom morph (dialed) based on Pazu by Sarsa&Thorne. Alice for Aiko by Mada&Thorne, with reworked textures. XinXin for Aiko by Yamato (character textures), optimized for Carrara. Xylia Double French Braids hair by AprilYSH morphed for wider braid-ends. Pose is partly based on Aery Soul's free partial poses. Basket from Red Riding Hood for Maddie by Frances Coffill, also DAZ Original. Toto: Millennium Puppy LE, DAZ Productions. Textures reworked. Carrara Hair, custom made. Odin: Scarecrow by Mada, heavily morphed using some of the morphs created by dorkati (GHD), but mostly with my own specially created ones. Hat is my own start to finish -- model, morph and textures. Robe is Wizard Robes for M3 by Lourdes Mercado with heavily reworked textures by Sarsa from Paradox Pookling. Hugin and Munin: Song Bird Remix and Song Bird Remix Second Edition by Ken Gilliland&BLRender, remorphed, including my own morphs. Lantern: Spanish Rose -- Chalet de Sevilla by Redhouse Studios, retextured by myself. Yggdrasil (the World Tree): Carrara tree creator. 2D: Added effects: Fog -- using Rons Fog Brushes by Ron Deviney. Light from the lamp. Runes on the fence. Border. I also used Gimp to composite the image from Carrara's multi-pass rendering and some minor touch-ups.

I love the composition. (Seems to be a reoccurring comment) ;) I won't comment much on the scene itself, as obviously you're recreating a classic scene from a classic story that already holds it's own. But I will comment on the lighting. I'm not sure of your intent, but to my eyes the lighting seems a bit too over produced, IF the light source was supposed to come from the lamp itself. If that's the case, that quantity of light would not produce the amount of light present in your scene. In fact, it would create a subtle brilliance with a very high falloff rate. It also detracts from the warmth and emotive feeling that a lamp normally adds to a scene. Does this make sense?
