Description

Well folks, it was a sad weekend in my household. I finally had to send my Buddy, Newt, to Doggie Heaven. His parents were: Vopo Vom Kirschental and Hera Vom Dreihasenfenster Fathers side was from a breeder for guard dogs. Mothers side was from a breeder for seeing eye dogs. Robin and I always wanted a pedigreed Shepard. We saw his co-litter and one stood out as being calmer. We bought him and named him Newton because his IQ was so high. (Yes, they have IQ tests for dogs...) I trained him with all the standard stuff, which he learned with ease. We always wanted to breed him, but never did get around to it. He never bit anyone, but made no bones about meaning business against anyone that seemed threatening to Robin, I, or anyone in his care. He loved kids and many a time did my neighbors kids, that lived in our apartment complex, ask to borrow him to escort them on a mission to the 7-11 at night. The neighborhood had gangs, drunks and other hostiles. He minded the kids perfectly and sat at the door of the market, waiting for them, to escort them back home. Dogs I've had before where like children, always messing around and getting into mischief. Newton acted like an adult and you could see there was a light on, behind his eyes, when you spoke with him. He was nearly 14 and virtually crippled in the hind quarters. When he took a dump, sometimes he'd lose his balance and sit in the fresh pile. Have you ever seen an embarrassed dog? He'd look the other way and I'd swear that if he could whistle... He would! Anyway, other health problems were stacking up and I couldn't put the decision off any longer, so Saturday, after breakfast, took him to the Animal Shelter, run by the Humane Society, and released him to them. Possibly the 2nd most traumatic day in my long life, the 1st being the passing of my wife, Robin, about 2 years ago. I feel like such a traitor. I should be back in form soon, so until then, have a great week, and give your dog an extra hug today for me. Love to All of You Dave and Mom

My sympathy. I had to put my girl down 2 years ago and still ache for her at times.

Ohhhh Dave, my deepest sympathy and condolences to you about Newton. What an outstanding write-up about him; I almost feel like I know him reading all the details. This sounds truly devastating and I'm very sorry to hear about your great loss. Sounds like he was just the greatest family member ever and what a list of history! The photos are fantastic and really show some great sides to him! The upper right photo is just a timeless classic. You did the right there by relieving his misery and I know that's a decision that nobody wants to make. All dogs go to Heaven, especially the ones that don't bite, and I'm sure he's much better without the burden of pain and suffering. My best wishes to you, Dave! Hang in there, Buddy! Excellent images and memorial!

I'm so sorry. They get to be just like your children. This is a wonderful way to remember what a special pal he was and memorialize it.

Sorry about your recent lose in the family. I saw Newton last weekend and wasn't sure he would make it through summer. Now the pain is gone and Newton is in dog heaven with a lot of other dogs to run and play with and all the chicken he can eat. Excellent memorial for Newton. Love Ken

I know what sorrow there is in loosing a beloved pet. They are a part of the family - maybe even the best part since all they ask is for food, water, bed, and a pat once in awhile. What other friend can measure up to that! Here's to Newton and to our Best Friends.

I have only been here a short time, but I became so attached to Newt by feeding him when you were gone away. I miss him terribly, but Sat. was the hardest. Sometimes we have to do things that hurt.I lost my baby, Tiny at sixteen years. I am glad you saved the pictures, Dave,Love you...Mom...Voted

I had my 14 year old cat euthanized about three weeks ago so I know how it feels. Cat or Dog ( I've had both over the years) we get so attached emotionally there like kids. No more for me I just don't need the pain anymore. Beautiful dog he was "Newton" ol Buddy. George
