Description

Two Aero A.101 bombers of the Spanish Republican Armed Forces on morning patrol. The Aero A.101 was a Czechoslovakian made aircraft which was meant to be an improvement on their Aero 100 model. Alas it was a step backwards in performance. Despite having a 1000hp engine, the additional power was negated by its weight and it turned out to be heavy and sluggish, with the added downside of overheating if the pilot stayed at 90% power for too long. Saving a major design disappointment was the order of 50 aircraft by the Spanish Republican forces during the Spanish civil war. Owing to the capture of a number of the craft by the Nationalist forces before shipment arrived, the Aero A.101 fought on both sides of the conflict. In flight, one gets an impression of it's size, only to be surprised at seeing it's enormity on the ground. It was aptly nicknamed "Orca", the whale! Aero A.101: Beautifully realized model of this interesting aircraft generously shared for free on sharecg by Pedro Caparros. Thank you, Pedro! Trees: Wonderful models by Swidhelm here on Rendo. Excellent. It really conveys the feeling of northern Europe during WW1. Nice modeling and I like the distribution of the trees.

The Spanish Civil War has been the occasion to experiment new weapons, to improve existing ones, to experiment new tactics including...bombing of civil population ( Guernica or Gernika)

Good composition and fantastic render. You're welcome, Bill, thank you for the mention. Completing the information, saying that the purchase of these aircraft was one of the most unfortunate operations of the Spanish republic. Czechoslovakia opted to develop a new version (Ab-101) and sell the obsolete A-101. Was used as an intermediary to the government of Latvia forcing included in the lot several old planes. (with the commission Latvians could buy a dozen brand new spitfires) The initial delivery remained so long in port in Latvia, amid a tangle of intermediaries, Republicans agents and spies, which Franco marina, it was easy to intercept. I am not aware the nickname "orca". As far as I know, he nicknamed "Oca" (goose); one heavy bird, leisurely flight and aggressive character but not as lethal as a killer whale. Also nicknamed "Praga" (Prague) or "Papagayo" (parrot) ???

A correction and apology. Pedro is correct that the nickname was "Oca" rather than "Orca". My misreading. It looked so huge and lumbering on the ground that I read the whole whale thing into it. The other nickname was "Papagayo" or parrot, although I have no idea why they called it that. Maybe it made a lot of noise in the trees in the morning and evening? Thanks for the correction, Pedro.

Now that's class...fantastic render Bill, the aircraft could have been 'lost' in all that scenery but you've carried this off masterfully. The wide angle works so well here....a definite Fave.....
