Description

Moreno Glacier in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Because of favorable local conditions of a low gap in the Andes, Moreno Glacier is only one of a few glaciers on Earth that is advancing today. The surface area of this glacier is about 247sqkm, and its leading egde, the portion seen in this photo taken from Peninsula de Magallanes, is 5km long and 60m high. Because of the advancement and constant movement within the glacier, there are frequent loud noises like rifle shots. Large chunks of ice fall off the leading edge at intervals, creating a spectacular view. On this December day it was very windy, with rain at the lower elevation and snow higher up, with infrequent glimpses of the sun. Moreno Glacier is located 80km west of El Calafate in Santa Cruz Province, Patagonia, Argentina. Thanks for viewing and your comments. To Marinalea and others that may be interested. The glacier is melting but is being replenished by the heavy precipitation. Since the glacier is covering a valley that is sloping downward, gravity and the weight of the ice provide the forward movement. In the process the glacier dams part of Lago Argentino, the Brazo Rico part of the lake. This Brazo Rico branch is fed by several small streams, and the water that flows into it can no longer flow into the main body of Lago Argentino and the water level of the Brazo Rico rises. Eventually, the melting ice below can no longer support the weight of the water behind it and the dam collapses in an explosion of ice and water. It ruptures on average every four years, but it varies. This picture was taken in December 2003.

Ahh! Amazing image. The blueness. I only went to see the Mer de Glace near Chamonix, but did not get this kind of view. There is an ice cave there, which is pretty interesting. Patagonia in on my long-term itinerary anyway, and now I have yet another place to visit when I travel to S.A. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful shot. I got to see two glaciers up close when I was in Alaska, and they truly are amazing. It's very difficult to show their scale in a photo; I remember chunks of ice as big as a house falling of and crashing into the water.
