Description

Monuments were paid for and installed at Gettysburg by veteran groups from both the North and South. Most of them were in place by the early 1900s before the outbreak of WW I. The monument above is for the 4th New York Independent Artillery Battery. It supported Union infantry from this position on a ridge line near Devil's Den during the morning and afternoon of July 2, 1863.

Nice shot Bill. The framing of the tree adds visual interest to this. (my opinion)

Thanks Fred. The tree looked old enough to have been there during the battle. Such trees are called "witness trees". There aren't many of them left.

As Andrea would say 'a real corker'. Your narrative brought to mind an image I once saw of the Devil's Den with a dead sniper lying among the rocks.

Not really into war history as you are, Bill, but I appreciate the composition & agree with Fred's observation about the use of the tree as a framing device...
