Description
The real thing here, captured 3/13/10 at the beautiful Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Meerkats are small burrowing animals, living in large underground networks with multiple entrances which they leave only during the day, except to avoid the heat of the afternoon. They are very social creatures and they live in colonies together. Animals in the same group groom each other regularly. The alpha pair often scent-mark subordinates of the group to express their authority. There may be up to 30 meerkats in a group.
To look out for predators, one or more meerkats stand sentry, to warn others of approaching dangers. When a predator is spotted, the meerkat performing as sentry gives a warning bark or whistle, and other members of the group run and hide in one of the many holes they have spread across their territory.

Who doesn't love a meerkat? LOL Great shot! They stashed the binoculars until all the tourists leave... 😉

Lol, Rod. I must have seen this a few days after you posted it: I never associated it with the last upload (the 1st version of this): I love that you followed that with real meerkats. And your pic shows them sitting so quietly, and at attention. If this is how they do lookout, I'm impressed. They really look attentive. Wonderful shot of these beautiful animals, Harry.
