Description

This is a great horned owl. She weighs 809 grams. That is a bit large for this owl. She was hunting during the day time and once again, people caused the issue. This time it was not deliberate, but by just not knowing. She was out in the middle of the day hunting. This is common with owls when they are feeding chicks. The problem occured when she hit a soccer net. She became very intangled and was there for about 2-3 hours. The stress alone might have killed her. It took me 20 minutes to cut her out. After taking her to my friends center, we looked her over and could not find any broken bones. We decided that I would take her back and try t release her because of the chicks. This picture is one I took when she was frist out of the box. Sadly, she could not get off the ground. I gathered her up and went home. I took her to the other center the next day. They have much larger cages, and we need to see if she can fly. We are hoping that she is just exhausted and sore. My concern is that the chicks do not have her. We are hoping that the male is around as they also stay and help raise the chicks. If not, the clock is ticking. It breaks my heart to think that the chicks might not make it because of this. The people had the portable net in the front yard. They were upset about the owl being hurt. I took the opportunity to explain the issue with owls have with nets and fences. We get many in each year because of this. These materials and the unatural pattern is something that they have trouble seeing as a threat. Now we just wait and hope. We have no way of knowing where the nest is. these owls will hunt over several square miles.

Beautiful portrait of Mama O!
hopefully, someone with good or great hearing will hear the cries/chirps/whatever noises baby owls make so they can locate the nest and be abel to reunite Mama O with her little ones

Nothing broken suggests exhaustion. I really hope she gets back home to her chicks. I wonder, how did she behave when you were untangling her? Aggressive? Or let you help her? I wonder how much they understand when we try to help them? I'd like to hear a bit about this. Also, did she let you scoop her up, or was she a bit skittish, maybe bitey? At least she let you get a very good photo of her. Beautiful creature. Keep up the good work! :-)

My rating - well, I'll try to avoid making a hole in the ceiling!

PS - how are momma eagle and "spoiled fuzz ball" doing?
