Description

Another view of Maeshowe Chambered Tomb on Orkney. With zoom you can see the entrance to the tomb. The tomb sits on flat ground of a farmer' field, which is worked right to the edge of the trench encircling the tomb. There are probably very few other places in the world where the chronological range of intact habitation is so vast. Here we see some 5000 yrs of building construction within a few hundred meters of each other. To put that into some kind of context, that time range takes us back to about halfway to the end of the last ice age. By that time Orkney had lost its forest and paleontological evidence suggests the landscape would have looked pretty much like we are seeing it here.

The precise color separation between sky and fields symbolizes well the concern of life after the death of mankind. Green is the certainty of what we know, the stormy sky the fear of the uncertainty of the post life. This image evokes many concepts!

A most interesting contrast, indeed. The sheer sweep of this landscape is truly magnificent! These last two photos (minus the building, tractor and cell tower) bring to mind the Barrow Downs from LOTR. I love your reply about the cow pies! LOL! Aw, come on, Roxy - wouldn't you just love the feel of cool poo between your toes? Now, that's REALLY experiencing the nitty-gritty of the environment! :-D

Fascinating history. Like the juxtapositioning of very old and new. Nicely done all the way around.

the fantastic sky gives the shot a mystical feeling! and I know one has to do postwork to this kind of captures because when I was in Kilmartin area with tombs like in your shot and also the standing stones ......there was in reality no mood and no feeling around! ;o)

That's almost surreal from this perspective with that farm. Probably a more common site in Scotland and England. Most of the Native constructions around this country are all gone. Beautiful picture.
