The Destroyers arrived in orbit. Our orbital defenses will get them. Today is my birthday, I’m 12. Father gave me this book to write my thoughts, and mother gave me a pen that never runs out of ink. I got some clothes also. We went outside to watch the defense satellites fire at the Destroyer fleet.
I don’t want to write every day, maybe just the important stuff. My friend, Sreniaus, said her family is going to their mountain vacation house because his father is worried about the Destroyers. They said at school a Battle Carrier is returning to deal with the Destroyer fleet. We had roast beef for dinner.
I can’t believe everyone is getting worried about the Destroyers. There were a couple kids not in class today. I heard they left the city. Uncle Rasius has been called back to active duty. He’s going to the moon base. Uncle Rasius is super tough, he’ll send those Destroyers back home.
We had a battle drill at school today. We had to go down to the basement and wait there for three hours. Some kids were scared. I snuck up to the roof with Lotharian and Tolis. The Battle Carrier arrived and is so big you can see it in orbit.
They combined our classes today. At least half the kids didn’t come to school. I heard a lot of people are going to the mountains. I was getting scared, but then we got a message from Uncle Rasius. He said they’re bringing two more Battle Carriers back from the colonies.
At lunch our teacher told us school was cancelled until further notice. They had a hard time finding enough transports to take us all home. Mother came and got me and took some other kids home also. My friend Tolis said his family is going to try to get off world, but the World Bridge isn’t allowing private travel because the military is using it to bring soldiers to fight the Destroyers. Tolis said his family has passage on one of those big pleasure ships, the Golden Star I think.
The news said everyone has to stay inside. Mother and I slept in the safe room. Father has been at his research laboratory and I haven’t seen him much.
It was just on the news, the Golden Star was destroyed trying to escape. My friend was on that ship. What’s happening?
The news said the entire fleet has been recalled. Some missiles got past our defenses, one of the World Bridges was destroyed. Father said to pack and be ready to leave when he calls. I helped mother pack.
The colonies are under attack. They said Polaris Prime was destroyed. Mother cried because Aunt Sela was on Polaris. I’m really scared now. Father hasn’t called in days.
The fleet has arrived. Mother didn’t even try to stop me, I went outside to watch the battle. It looked like the entire sky had caught fire. They said the moon base was destroyed. Father still hasn’t called. I’m worried.
The last three World Bridges were destroyed. There’s no way to get off world now. There’s hundreds of people outside the President’s Palace wanting to know why he didn’t call for evacuation when there was still time. I’m really worried about Mother. She just sits in the safe room and won’t talk. I wish Father was here, he would know what to do.
Two men from father’s laboratory came to get Mother and me. Mother locked herself in the safe room and wouldn’t come out. They told me to get in the transport with them. I didn’t want to go, I fought back but one of the men hit me really hard. I woke up as they were dragging me out of the transport. They held a knife to my throat until Father gave them a red access key to a secret escape ship. Father carried me inside his research laboratory. I told Father about Mother. He said he would go get her but had to take me somewhere safe first. I’m in Father’s office. My head hurts. I’ll write more later, I need to sleep.
Day 29 – Evening
Father woke me up and gave me a shot. He said it would make me feel better. He said we’re going to a research station located at the core of the planet. He took me to a descent tube and put me inside. He said I was going down first and he was going to go get mother. That’s where I am now. This thing is falling so fast it makes my stomach feel funny. Sorry if the handwriting is sloppy, it’s hard to write in this elevator.
Father hasn’t come back yet. I’m exploring the research station. I found a security room so I can listen to the news and watch cameras on the surface.
A lot of spaceships are trying to escape. I don’t think any of them are getting away. The news was only on for a few minutes today. We’re losing. Father isn’t back yet. I tried to make the elevator take me back up but the controls don’t work. I think Father locked me out so I have to stay down here.
Father isn’t back yet. The news is just a recording now. They say our fleet was destroyed and none of our colonies are transmitting anymore. They say for everyone to stay inside, and if you have to go outside to wear a mask. The Destroyers are using a bio-weapon on us.
There’s still enough cameras working I can see all over the world. There’s millions of people lying in the streets. I think they’re dead. The Destroyers poisoned us. I think I’m the last person alive.
Father lied. He was never coming back. I found his research notes. The President knew the Destroyers had a bio-weapon and were going to use it on us. Father was gone all that time because he was down here trying to find a cure. His notes say he tried 234 times. The last entry says he found the cure, but there wasn’t time to make more. He only had one dose. That’s the shot he gave to me. He left me here alone. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him.
I’m sorry, please come back daddy, please.
I can see Destroyers walking around up there, but somethings wrong, they look sick.
I think they’re looking for something….
Day 43 – Afternoon
I was watching the Destroyers searching the laboratory up there. I saw them find the descent tube. They tried to activate it and there was an explosion. The whole building blew up and the tube collapsed. I’m really trapped down here now. But I have plenty of food.
I can see the Destroyers are back from a camera on a building across the parking lot. They brought something that looks like a big drill. I think they’re going to try to dig down to me. And they are sick, I can see some of them on the ground not moving.
I figured it out. I re-read Father’s research notes. The bio-weapon was only supposed to work against us, but their plan backfired and they’re getting sick and dying. I think they know this is where we were working on the cure and they’re trying to dig down here. I’m burning all of Father’s notes.
I finished burning Father’s notes. I can see the Destroyers on the surface. There is a lot of them and they are definitely digging down here. I was trying to figure out how I can blow this place up, and me too. They could get the cure out of my blood, but I’m not going to let that happen. I’m going to kill them by making sure they don’t get the cure.
Day 48 – Evening
This is crazy. You won’t believe where I am. I started hearing sounds of digging from the collapsed descent tube. Then an alarm went off saying a self-destruct countdown has begun. Then a big metal door opened that I couldn’t get into before because it was locked. There was an entire train inside. I found a note from Father with a red access key. The note says the train is actually an exploration vehicle and will take me to another Universe. That’s insane. The note said I had one hour once the alarm went off to put the key in and leave before this place vaporized. Well, I’m not stupid. I spent that hour grabbing all the food, medicine, books, and everything else I could carry into the train. This place is a mess. I threw stuff everywhere. Then I put the key in and the train started moving. I thought it was going to crash into the wall, but then it jumped through a gate portal. That’s where I am now. I don’t know where this train is taking me, but I thought I’d write this down now.
Oh my gosh! What the heck! Why did Father send me here? This is horrible. I’ve been attacked non-stop since I got here. This is a nightmare. There’s monsters everywhere, big monsters, really really big monsters. And I think there’s dead people walking around. It’s cold, and it’s always snowing. I lost one of the cars to the train, I had to disconnect it and let it go. Something so big I could only see its foot stomping the train trying to kill me. The train has a standard energy shield, but even that wasn’t enough. The shield failed and the monster crushed the last car. I got it disconnect and got away, but what the heck is this place?
This train A.I. is stupid. Father didn’t have time to finish programming it, so it has a lot of glitches. The train actually attacked me. Of course a small laser cannon can’t kill me, but it still hurt like heck. Thank goodness Mother and Father paid for the best genetic upgrades before I was born, or I’d be toast. I’ve deactivated the safety protocols and now the train is doing what I tell it.
I’ve been really busy. With the safety protocols deactivated I was able to read all the notes about this place. So, the deal is, our scientists discovered this place eight years ago. It’s a quantum universe, but to be more accurate, it’s a white hole. The only one that exists. It was formed at the moment of creation. All life comes from here, and all life returns to here. The government knew twenty years ago that the Destroyers were working on a bio-weapon. So our scientists were looking for a place we could evacuate to if we needed. I guess they waited too long and all this was a waste of time. I have a map of where research stations are located. I’m headed to one now, but I wanted to see the wall first. We have Nano-construction bots working on the foundation we’ll build the rest of what we need… oh crap…here comes another herd of monsters. I’ll write again as soon as I can.
Okay, so the last couple weeks were crazy. I have to get away from the wall, that’s where most of the monsters are. So, the white hole has an event horizon access point. The Nano-construction bots are building a massive wall across that horizon. I’ve named it the Gates of the Dead. The best part is that a quantum barrier is being built into the wall to keep the Elementals out of here. Which is fine with me, they weren’t allowed back home either because they cause so many problems, Good riddance. I’ve even had Elementals attacking me in here. I hope the Nano-bots chase them out soon, I need a break, I’m exhausted just trying to stay alive. I’m heading deep into the interior of this Universe. I’ll have to check out the research stations another time.
I found a section with roads, so I stopped and checked it out. I guess the Nano-construction bots finished preparing this area already. The roads aren’t big, but they wind all over the place. The dead people seem to like it. Nothing can attack you on the paths, probably a quantum barrier built into the paths. I’ve named them the Paths of the Dead.
I’m sorry I haven’t written in a long time. I found a desert and it’s quiet here. No monsters, nothing. I’ve been sleeping, reading, and just doing nothing. I did finally get everything put away, and I’ve discovered the train’s maintenance bots, so I’ve got them fixing the damage done to the train. I’m so lonely.
I think I’m going insane. Sometimes at night I think I see people walking around inside the train. There isn’t, I’ve check the sensors. It’s me, I’m so lonely I think I’m losing my mind.
It’s my birthday, I’m 13, happy freaking birthday to me. I got lost yesterday. I went out for a walk and then couldn’t find the train again. It was the train that came and found me. I’m not leaving the train again.
Oh my gosh. You wouldn’t believe what happened. I was sitting on the roof of the train and billions of people just appeared out of nowhere. I was scared at first, but they are so nice. Somehow they kind of just knew what I’ve been through. They’re a reptilian species called the Mathors. Their sun exploded and destroyed their planet. I crawled down from the train and a Mathor woman came up and without saying anything, she hugged me and held me. I cried forever. I love these people. They’re searching for all their eggs. I’m using the train sensors to help find the eggs.
We’ve found so many of their eggs, and we’re still finding more. We’ll find them all. Maszzthhzzz, that’s the Mathor woman I told you about. Well, she’s being like a mother to me. She has kids, so I’m not lonely anymore.
I think we’ve found all the eggs we’re going to find. Maszzthhzzz said I shouldn’t live on the train, so the Mathors are building a ranch for me. I had to show them pictures of what a ranch on my planet looks like. They took one look at the pictures and started building. These Mathors really know how to build stuff. Their even building a Blacksmith shop. Maszzthhzzz mate, Jozzthazzz, is going to teach me to work metal. Have I mentioned how much I love these Mathors, they’re my family now.
The first egg hatched. She’s a girl, and alive. I guess you’re not allowed to be born dead. But that leads to the next problem. The monsters have found us. There’s enough Mathors to defend us for now, but I’ve got to find a way to protect them.
I’ve found the solution. I went through the list of all the science stations my people left behind before they were recalled to help defend our planet. I wish some would have disobeyed the order to return home. I wouldn’t be the last of my species if they had. Anyway, the end project was to create worlds that could contain all the species with their own kind and end the chaos here. And of course create a new world for us also. There is a machine called a Crystal Generator. I’m heading there in the morning.
I’ve activated the Crystal Generator. It was spectacular. Trillions of little Crystal Bubbles spread out in the flash of an eye, and all the monsters disappeared. The Crystal Bubbles are entire worlds. It’s amazing. I can travel to them with the train, but nobody can leave their world. I suppose someday I’ll have to make a way for the sane people to travel and visit their allies and friends in different worlds, but for now everyone is neatly on a world and can’t be hurt anymore by the monsters. Mainly, the Mathor are safe. I’m heading back now.
Jozzthazzz was waiting for me when I got back. On the Mathor world they lived inside big walled cities. They want to build one here. I think it’s a great idea. We’re going to have a big meeting on how to go about building it, and what will go inside it, and you know, all that stuff.
My ranch is done. It’s really nice. I have a real room to sleep in, and all my new brothers and sisters. I still miss Mother and Father, but I guess this is where I have to live now. I wonder what happened to the Destroyers. I hope they’re all dead, they deserve it for what they did.
It’s my birthday, I’m 14. I took Jozzthazzz and showed him a science research station my people left behind. It’s actually a book repository. I’ll just call it the Library. The scientists were bringing books from my planet so we wouldn’t lose all our history and advancements if we had to evacuate here. Jozzthazzz was impressed with all the books and I guess it gave him some ideas to incorporate a library into the walled city they are planning. Well, this journal didn’t have many pages to begin with. Father probably didn’t think I would ever actually fill it up. But, I guess I’ll end here and start a new journal now.
Jasai set the journal aside and wiped the tears from her eyes. Zil was staring at her curiously. He had crawled out of the fireplace and was sitting next to it now. Jasai jumped up and ran to him, dropped down on her knees, and threw her arms around him.
“I love you, Zil,” she said.
Zil gently pushed her back and tipped his head with a smile. “You love the story of how the Mathors and Master Aestar became friends.”
Jasai raised a brow. “You know the story?”
“All Mathor know the story,” said Zil.
“Well, it’s not just my emotions going crazy,” said Jasai. “The story just confirmed what I already knew about you and the Mathors. I’ve never felt about anyone the way I feel about you.”
Zil smiled. “Okay.”
“You’ll see, Mr. Zil, you’ll see,” said Jasai. “Come on, let’s figure out how we’re going to get inside that library.”
