Description

To commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First world war an art installation was created by the artist Paul Cummins and Tom piper (responsible for setting), using the Tower of London as the back drop. Within the moat surrounding the Tower of London 888,246 ceramic red poppies was progressively planted by volunteers throughout the period of July to November 2014, with the last poppy being planted on 11 November (Remembrance Day). Each poppy represented a British/Colonial serviceman lost in the war. The top-right image and bottom pano shows the 'Wave' feature of the installation - a wave of red poppies breaching over the walk-way entrance to the Tower. Incidentally, the top-left pano shows 3 life-sized Lion sculptures by artist Kendra Haste, these are made of wire mesh and are located by the ruins of the Lion Tower near the main entrance. Such exotic animals used to be kept at the Tower for over 600 years - The Royal Menagerie. Many thanks for viewing!!
