Description

Another shot from the drive through Congewai a few days back... Cassie spotted this scene and brought the car to a halt so I could take photos. Someone was obviously having a good bonfire that day, something that's pretty safe to do in winter... a few months ago in summer that would've been highly illegal as the slightest spark can start a bushfire, let alone anything bigger! Are you in Australia? Here in US, we have to get burning permits from the fire department because in the dry season we have huge field fires.

I'm English, currently living in New South Wales. In the Australian summer I experienced temperatures in the late 40s celsius (in excess of 115 degrees fahrenheit) but unlike the English summer it was generally drier, less humid. It was easy to see how raging bushfires could start in the blink of an eye. The New South Wales bushfire on New Year's Day was apparently started deliberately (a bunch of kids if I remember right) which makes it even worse.

I'm so glad you captured this scene so perfectly, thank you so much! New Year's was a bit of a nightmare, the four hour drive through bushland to get around the gigantic blaze was a little on the stressful side, but that's life in Oz. The high content of oil in the eucalyptus leaves (which is actually what gives the mountains here their blue hue) is so volitile that any fire in summer here is just asking for trouble, the firestorms are incredible! Which makes this image even more beautiful to me, thank you again my dear friend! hugest hugs xxxxxx

I see all this smoke gave you an instant desaturation job! Looks like the low cloud we have in the hills here. How is it you can get a bit of smoke to look so impressive? :-) Still receiving no notification of your posts, btw... Lucky I was passing.

Lovely composition and dramatic lighting have turned a good spot by Cassie into a great picture. I love the sense of depth at the base of the smoke plume as the light penetrates the smoke and trees.

Great shot Jimski, very atmospheric. I like how the trees seem to be following the smoke. Here in Portual we are starting to have some forest fires already as we do every summer. Murph
