Description

Nim hurried to Pt’this’s receiving room. He wondered why Pt’this had left guests waiting like that while they ate. Unless they hadn’t been waiting. If they were telepathic, they could have let Pt’this know when they were there. But what dragons would want to see him but contact Pt’this first? He entered the room and stopped short. He growled. “What are you doing here? Do you know the trouble you caused?” “Nim, calm down. Don’t go mad-dragon now,” Kar said. Nim growled again. “Nim, wait. Let’s talk, please,” Tor said putting herself between him and Kar. Nim wondered what he’d seen in the woman. Jo was much more preferable. He thought of Jo. She’d want him to talk rather than fight. “So talk. What are you doing here?” “We were looking for Kith.” “Kith’s dead,” he told them bluntly. He no longer cared about their feelings. “We know. Pt’this told us last night,” Tor said. “Last night? You were in Ann’s room.” He had figured there was someone in there Pt’this was trying to keep from him. “You’re the emissary?” Tor was just as surprised. “What were you doing in there? Helping the nobles?” “I was helping Ann. Kar’s been sending an enhanced community call for weeks. No one responded except Ann. He didn’t realize she was only half dragon and as fragile as she is. He was a bit panicky when we weren’t able to contact anyone.” “There’s something wrong with your telepathy. No one heard anything except Pt’this and what he heard was so faint he thought he was hearing things. He didn’t know who was calling or if anyone was truly calling so he didn’t respond fearing what it would do to Ann. He thought about someone else,” Nim said. “We didn’t know about her.” “You’ve been gone for five hundred years. You didn’t think that there might be at least one half-dragon born in that time?” Nim snarled. “You’ve changed Nim.” Kar was a little taken aback by Nim’s ferocity. He had always been easy going. “It happens when your best friend betrays you and all your people.” “I voiced my concerns, that’s all.” “You accused Mishtali of being immortal, knowing what it would do to your own brother. You saw what having an immortal mentor did for me, how the others treated me. You knew the same thing would happen to Pt’this. You also knew how it would affect the war.” “I thought he was immortal, what did you want me to do?” “Let him help us. That’s what he was doing. Who cares what he is? We needed him to win the war. You met my mentor. You knew some could be trusted.” “We could have done it without him.” “Who would’ve faced Nor’than? Pt’this? He’s the only one close to being strong enough. Even with my help, he couldn’t have defeated him. He was only half trained.” “I was just trying to help our people.” “You were jealous. Tor was no longer the strongest healer and Mishtali was able to train Pt’this when you couldn’t. You wanted to discredit them.” “I didn’t. I wanted to protect us. I was trying to help.” “If you wanted to help, you wouldn’t have left. Pt’this needed you.” “Pt’this was just upset because he made the wrong choice to make Mirimar change.” “Pt’this had no choice. He had spent that whole time they were missing in a trance, over a week. Mirimar could have saved herself anytime by transporting out, but she wouldn’t abandon him. She gave him her energy to get him out of the trance. He couldn’t transport her because she was dying and wouldn’t survive long enough for him to gather the strength. It took him five hundred years to recover. He’s just now starting to use his magic again.” Kar paled. “I had no idea.” “Of course you didn’t. You turned your back on us. I tried to tell you. I tried to get you to help, but your shade blasted pride got in the way.” “Nim, I’m sorry.” “What do you know about being sorry?” Nim demanded and walked out.
