Description

Sapphire stayed. “Go with them,” Pt’this said. “If you think I’m going to leave you two alone to tear each other apart, you’re crazy.” She poked Pt’this in the chest. “And how do you expect to stop us? You’re not even a mage,” Kartonesh asked. “Stop you?” She stepped close to him. “I’m not going to have to stop you because you won’t even start.” She stepped back. “Because if you do, you’ll never get these back.” She held up both their vials. “The price is for you two to talk without blows or magic.” “Why you little...” Kartonesh started. Pt’this growled. “If you want that back, watch what you say about my mate.” “Your mate? Her? A human?” Pt’this growled again. Kartonesh put up his hands in surrender. “Okay. Okay. She’s your mate.” “Let’s go to our receiving room and talk,” Sapphire suggested. She led the way. “Did you know she was a pickpocket before you mated?” Kar asked with a grin as they followed. Pt’this nodded. “She’s done this to me before.” Sapphire poured drinks as they sat. “What are you doing here? Why did you come back?” Pt’this asked. “We’re looking for Kith.” “After a hundred and fifty years?” “It’s a long story, but he’s still our son.” “He was your son,” Pt’this said bitterly. Sapphire glared at him. “You took half the clan with you when you left. The council didn’t have enough backing to go after Nor’than’s daughter, Lyra. She killed Kithmar.” “Killed? He’s dead?” “Don’t pretend you care. You abandoned him in the mountains.” “I didn’t abandon him. I sent him to you.” “I wasn’t even there. He nearly starved to death wandering around. He’s lucky I had to make a report to the council in person.” “I showed him the path. I told him to stay on it until he found the caves.” “Why didn’t you just bring him to the caves yourself? I still would have taken him in if you asked.” “We couldn’t. We didn’t dare. We both had fire death. The whole group had it. We didn’t dare enter the mountains and risk infecting Baj-tisk too. Kith had had it too. That was why he couldn’t fly. He was the first to be cured, and it didn’t look like any of the rest of us would make it so we brought him to you so he wouldn’t end up alone. I sent a message explaining all this. He didn’t give it to you?” Pt’this shook his head. “From what I could tell he was wandering around for at least a week. He must’ve lost it.” “Pt’this, I’m sorry. I tried contacting you telepathically, but the fire death made it impossible.” “I understand. I finally understand.” Sapphire returned the vials. “I’m going to check on Ann. You two behave.” “She’s your mate? I thought you and Mirimar were mates.” Kar asked watching her leave. “We were. She died.” “I’m sorry.” “This girl you call your niece is...?” “Her name is Annlonna, though she prefers Ann. She’s Thailyn’s daughter, Mirimar’s niece, though she was almost your daughter too.” “What?” Kar’s head whipped around. “She was Kith’s chosen.” “Not his mate?” Kar asked cautiously. He didn’t like dragons mating with other races. “No. Ann’s mother was a friend of the queen, and she died when Ann was born. We didn’t learn who her father was until a few months ago. She was adopted by King Emeton and Queen Tylan.” “So she was bound by treaty laws and couldn’t take a mate until she was married,” Kar surmised. He relaxed a little. “And, Kith died before that could happen.” “And this man who said he’s her mate?” “Is her husband. They were married a few days ago.” Kar shook his head. “Dragons getting married.” “So was I,” Pt’this said. Kar looked up in surprise. “I wasn’t being judgmental. I’m just surprised at how much has changed.” “It’s been five hundred years.” “Yes, it has.” “I don’t know if she’ll appreciate me telling you this, but you’re also a grandfather.” Kar looked confused. “I thought you said they hadn’t mated.” “They didn’t.” “But he was mated once?” “No. He adopted Sapphire.” “You married your grandniece? I am not your grandfather.” “You’re barely my brother. No. They never made it official. He took her in, cared for her like she was his daughter.” “Something’s wrong.” Pt’this stood. “What?” “I don’t know, but Sapphire suddenly got upset.” “You’ve bonded with a human?” “Of course, she’s my mate. And the bond is stronger than it was with Mirimar.” Pt’this grinned. “Stay here. I’m going to see what the problem is.” Sapphire met him at Ann’s bedroom door. “Shunati’s here with some other healer and some nobles, but they’re not here to help Ann.” “Shades. Already?”

That last bit doesn't sound good! Another great chapter.

When the nobles are involved, it's rarely good.

Nobles never help, except themselves. Great story and illustration. Well done, RP!
