Description

Ater the toasts, they cut the cake and then dancing began. They danced a few dances and then sat to visit with friends. They joined those they had met in Thager. Even though they had all moved to Sen-gan, Ann had rarely seen any of them. Rejenn introduced Cesni and Fists introduced Lotima as his pledged. “Congratulations,” Ann said to Fists and Lotima. “It’s been so long since we’ve seen each other.” Lotima hugged her. “Thank you, Fists talked about you. I had no idea who he meant. I can’t believe you were in Thager for years and I never knew. Though, I guess being a runaway you would have avoided people you knew. Your dress is beautiful. You always pick the best clothing.” “Thank you.” Ann smiled. Loti was one she had intentionally avoided. She would have done everything she could to help Ann if she had known, including going to her father for assistance. Andy pulled her onto his knee and put his arm around her. “She hardly looks like the same girl running around in the streets of Thager in boy’s clothes,” Darkham said. “And yet you still claimed I looked just like the princess.” Ann smiled. “Perhaps, that’s because you spent more time in trousers than in dresses even before you ran away.” Pt’this pointed out. “You haven’t worn that tiara since before you ran away. I thought maybe that was one of the things you had sold.” “I didn’t even take it. I didn’t think I’d be able to find someone who’d buy something that was obviously from the palace.” “Actually, I know two or three people who’d buy it,” Sapphire said. “But, you’d probably get more from the stones if you removed them.” Ann laughed. “Thanks, but I think I’ll keep it.” “When are you and Rejenn getting married?” Pt’this asked Cesni. Cesni looked away. “I don’t think we will,” she said softly. “Rejenn!” Sapphire scolded. “You have this beautiful woman who’s obviously in love with you, and you aren’t going to marry her?” “It’s not my choice. I wanted to get married as soon as we got to Sen-gan. She won’t marry me.” Rejenn insisted. All eyes turned to Cesni. She looked down at her swollen stomach. “It’s the baby’s father. I’m afraid of what he’ll do to Rejenn.” She showed them the scars on her arms. Andy felt Drepal stir. “You promised.” He whispered, and she went dormant again. He handed Ann her whiskey. “You can’t let him ruin your life,” Sapphire said. “If you won’t move forward, he still rules you.” “Perhaps when he’s been found,” Cesni said. “The prince-general is looking for him. Between his network and Rejenn’s, maybe he’ll be found. Maybe this ruse will work.” “What ruse?” Pt’this asked. She looked at Rejenn who nodded. “Rejenn is going to spread the word through his network that Drepal is looking for him. Then, either he’ll make a mistake, and they’ll find him, or he’ll go so deep into hiding we won’t have to worry anymore. I just can’t believe she offered to help.” Cesni didn’t notice, but several pairs of eyes looked to Ann. She carefully studied the bottom of her empty glass. “Drepal is a strange one. She has done terrible things, but she has no tolerance for abusive families,” Pt’this said. “I can’t believe you all know her,” Lotima said. “I’m sure some of what you hear is an exaggeration, but she still seems pretty terrifying.” Andy rubbed Ann’s back. He knew this talk would be distressing for her. He had a servant bring more whiskey. “Having her attention isn’t something you want to experience,” Pt’this said. “Of course, it also depends on if she’s working with you or on you.” Sapphire shuddered. “You’ve had that experience?” Lotima asked. Sapphire nodded. “This is a party,” Andy said. “Is there any way we could discuss something a little more cheerful?” He didn’t want to spend his wedding night trying to keep his wife from beating up on herself. Ann leaned back into him. “I’m sorry,” Lotima said. They talked a while longer and then excuse themselves to be able to greet others.
