Description

Andy needed to sit down. The heat and the noise were making him ill. Worried about him, Ann had Mila take a look at him. He was fine. It was partially nerves, and he wasn’t used to the heat. It was a much warmer climate than he had grown up in. Mila encouraged him to drink more and to take it easy. He changed into a T-shirt. It helped a little. He was having trouble believing he was actually getting married the next day and that affected him. Carla sat down with him and put a glass of wine on the table. Andy moved it from her reach. “That was for you anyhow,” she said. “Right. I don’t drink,” Andy said sourly. “Since when?” “I haven’t for years.” “I don’t remember that.” He resisted saying that was because she had been drunk for years. “That’s because I haven’t seen you in years,” he said instead. “You never come home.” “You never invite me. You don’t come to Chicago either. I at least invited you.” He sighed. “Listen, Mom, let’s not fight, not today. Just after Sarah dumped me, I got so drunk that I couldn’t remember anything. I didn’t like that, so I stopped drinking altogether.” He’d told her this before. He also had told her the rest of the story but today was not the day to go into that. “Probably for the best. You don’t want to become like your old mom here.” “Mom, don’t be like that.” “I’m just saying, that’s all. Ann seems to have enough troubles she doesn’t need you drinking.” “Don’t go there, Mom.” “I wasn’t. I was just going to say you treat her well.” “Thank you.” “Much better than you treated Sarah.” “How would you know? You never met Sarah.” “If you’d treated her better, she wouldn’t have dumped you.” He lost it. “She dumped me because she was too shallow and self-centered to take us seriously, but I supposed that’s my fault too. Just like it’s my fault you drink and it’s my fault Dad moved out, and it’s my fault Chrissy, and Annie died. It’s even my fault your grandbaby died.” He practically shouted that last part. “Chrissy wasn’t pregnant,” Carla said not understanding. “No, Annie was.” He couldn’t take it anymore. He stormed out to the garden.

It's curious how old cows are always brought back out of ditches. Well done, RP!

they'll be heading back to Chicago later in the story. But it's not downtown, it's the suburbs. Except maybe North Industries. He's the kind that would want a highrise downtown.
