Description

The food arrived first. Ann was starving, but she was often starving, so that was no big deal. She chose to be a good hostess and wait for her guests. Fortunately, they didn’t take long. They all agreed to eat without waiting for Andy. He may have eaten dinner, and in any case, he hadn’t missed lunch. Also, there was plenty of food so he wouldn’t go hungry. The servants in the kitchen knew her appetite and always sent extra food. While they ate, they talked about what had been happening in the past few months while they had been gone. Ann was careful not to mention the fight against Lyra, not knowing how much Andy wanted his parents to know about that. She also wasn’t sure how much to tell about the trip north to find the diary her father had left. The subject had always been a touchy one for her. Most of the nobles and even some of the servants had a tendency to look down on her because she was a bastard. But, those two things had pretty much taken up most of their time they had been there, so she told them some, mentioning that her birth mother had died when she was born and that she had never known her birth father. The king and queen had adopted her. She told them that they learned he had written a journal of sorts made up of letters to her and that she and Andy had ridden north to find it. She also told how her Uncle Pt’this and a friend of hers had feelings for each other but were both too shy to admit those feelings to the other person and how Andy had told her uncle that if he didn’t tell Sapphire of his feelings, Andy would. Carla had laughed at this. She recalled Andy doing the same thing with his younger sister and with friends at school. Apparently, his classmates had nicknamed him the matchmaker. The subject had just turned to wedding plans when Ann felt Andy arrive at the palace. Within seconds, a page was there letting her know he had returned. The boy must have been watching the stables, probably from nearby. She went and met Andy on the stairs. He was as anxious to see her as she was to see him. He hugged and kissed her right there at the top of the stairs. “I missed you so much,” he told her. “I missed you too.” Still, with his arms around her, he started down the hall, walking her backward towards her bedroom, but he stopped one door too soon. Opening the door to his room instead, he pushed her inside. Ann understood. Their chaperone was in her room, waiting. They could do what they wanted in here. Kissing her, he walked her to the bed. “Andy...” She started. “Please don’t tell me to stop,” he begged. She realized he was crying. It wasn’t passion he was feeling. It was just a simple need to be as close as possible. Their night apart had been hard on him too. “Andy, it’s okay. I’m okay,” she told him. “I couldn’t feel you. Pt’this wanted me to drink that stuff that blocks the bond. He said I should be familiar with it and that last night would be a good time to try it. It was like you were gone.” “Oh, Andy, I’m so sorry. It was my fault too. I got a little drunk last night anticipating a nightmare.” “Did it help?” He asked feeling hopeful. She didn’t have the heart to tell him no. “Maybe a little. I slept for three hours before Nim had to wake me. That’s an hour longer than usual.” “Next time, bring me with.” “I couldn’t,” she insisted. “Why not?” He asked. “Because we were picking up your wedding present.” She smiled. He leaned back to look at her. “What?” “We were picking up your wedding present. If you had come, it would’ve ruined the surprise.” “All of this was for some lousy gift?” “No, it was for a great gift. Come and see,” she claimed, but she was starting to doubt the wisdom of it. She pulled his hand. “Ann...” He resisted. “It really can’t wait for the wedding. Come. It’s right next door in our receiving room.” She tried to pull him to the door. “Please?” He sighed. He wasn’t really mad, just emotional. He followed her to the hall. She stopped outside the door. “Go in,” she told him. He opened the door and froze. “Mom? Dad?” Then he finally went in and hugged them. He turned to Ann who was still in the doorway. “This is where you went? You went back to Earth?” He asked going back to her. Ann nodded. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. “Sorry? For this? Why?” He hugged her. “For last night. That was why you couldn’t feel me,” she whispered in his ear. “Thank you,” he said. “You’re not mad?” She asked, surprised. He shook his head. “No. We’ll talk later.” She understood. This wasn’t a conversation to have in front of his parents. He turned back to his parents. “I’m glad you came. Welcome.” *** They talked late into the night getting caught up. Andy also avoided Lyra, not knowing how to tell them about that without them worrying. They, of course, had many questions, both about Menthanla and about their future plans. Carla was unhappy to learn they were planning on staying in Menthanla. She wanted to be able to see the grandkids. Grandkids?” Andy asked looking at Ann. He laughed. “We never talked about kids. Do you want kids?” “Of course, don’t you?” Ann asked. “I do, though I don’t think as many as Pt’this and Sapphire are thinking about. He said something about maybe a dozen.” “A dozen? A dragon having a dozen kids?” Ann laughed. “That would be a first.” “Dae once told me he acts too human. This would prove it.” “That it would.” Ann agreed. They assured Andy’s parents that they would come and visit when possible and Ann would be able to scry them periodically also so they could keep in touch. After a while, they finally decided to call it a night and get some sleep.
