That night Andy crawled into bed with Ann, drained. She was too. He held her close The day had been very emotional for her and Andy worried about nightmares.
He kissed her. “Congratulations on being a full-fledged mage,” he said.
“Thanks. And welcome to the Baj-tisk clan,” she said. “You are now a citizen of a kingdom on a world where you might not stay.”
“What?” Andy thought she wasn’t making any sense.
“Before we came, we had planned on returning to your world. We never decided what we’re going to do.”
“What do you want?” He asked surprised. He had forgotten about that.
“I haven’t given it much thought. So much has been happening. I’ve focused mostly on getting through each day. What do you want?”
“I thought I made that clear back in Chicago. I want to be with you. I don’t care if we live here, there, or somewhere else. As long as I’m with you, I’m home.
“I will tell you something though. You were wrong. You said you weren’t close to anyone here except for Sapphire. But there’s Pt’this and Nimitinas, Voramini, Darkham, Fists, and Rejenn. The young ones care a lot about you. You were the one they went to Dragon Castle to help. And while you may not have an ideal relationship with your parents, they do care more than you realize. Heck, even Remmy cares.”
Ann snorted at that.
“He does,” Andy insisted. “He told me in Paosij before he knew who I was, that he regretted all those things he did, that he wanted to treat you better. I think it’s likely that if it weren’t for that spell causing him to be mean to you, he probably would’ve been a good big brother, maybe.
“You seem happier here. You spent the whole time you were on my world trying to get back here. You only agreed to stay there because I asked you to. You were going to give up everything. I can’t ask you to do that.”
“What about you? You’re giving up your life back there for me.”
“My life?” Andy laughed wryly. “You’ve seen my life. My sister’s dead. My mother blames me for every bad thing that happened in her life. My dad was a monster. My step-dad doesn’t know how to deal with me anymore. I taught karate, and I cooked. I can do that here. I love you. You are my life.”
She snuggled closer to him. “And you are mine. We’re here, we’ll stay. If we need to, we’ll leave. As long as we’re together, that’s what matters.”
