Description

When Nim finished Sapphire’s tattoo, she excused herself to go visit Dae and Ti, if he agreed to it. Then Pt’this and Nim turned to Ann. They both looked ready to lecture her, but she couldn’t imagine what she might’ve done this time. “Pt’this tells me you believe you saw Mishtali when you were in the trance,” Nim said. “I did.” “But he died five hundred years ago.” “That’s what I said. But he said that he ended up on Andy’s world, that he was stuck there.” “How do you know it wasn’t another black dragon?” “Because he wasn’t in dragon form.” “Show me what he looked like.” “I can’t. My magic isn’t strong enough yet.” Nim raised an eyebrow and looked at Pt’this. “It’s not. Andy said she’s progressing, but it’s going slowly.” “It’s been a month,” Nim protested. “The deeper you go, the longer it takes to recover. No one’s ever gone that deep before and survived. We have no idea how long it will take,” Pt’this pointed out. Nim nodded. “Can you show her Mishtali?” He could do it himself but Pt’this was using his magic again, and he wanted to encourage it. “I can.” He made an image of a man appear. “Is this him?” Ann looked. “He was a little older, but yes.” “And he wanted you to bring us to Andy’s world?” Nim asked. Ann nodded. “He asked for father first, and I said he wasn’t around. Then he asked for a healer and Pt’this.” “He said ‘Pt’this’?” Pt’this looked surprised. “No, he said ‘Tomin Mishtan’ but you don’t go by that anymore.” “And he asked for Andy and me?” Nim continued. “Yes. He said not to come through the gate. Then he told me how to get out of the trance.” “He did know how to do that. He told me you need to find an exit and then find nearby magic to draw into you. He didn’t mention how you could draw in your own if needed,” Pt’this said. He looked distant a moment. Ann guessed he remembered when he was trapped in a trance for over a week. He’d known how to get out but failed, and Mirimar had suffered because of it. “Are you sure this wasn’t part of the trance?” Nim asked. Ann nodded. She wasn’t comfortable talking about her trances. It was worse than talking about her nightmares. “When Andy connected with me, some of my injuries started to heal, and I grew stronger. When he left, the injuries started to come back. The same thing happened when I was talking with Mishtali. Also, you never taught me how to get out of the trance, so how could I have dreamt to do that?” “Mishtali once told me there was a way to reach someone in a trance over long distances, but he never taught it to me. He said it was very dangerous,” Pt’this offered. Nim nodded. “I was told the same thing. It’s a way to communicate between worlds if you can’t scry the person. The problem is, you end up in a trance yourself. “It does sound like you did talk with him,” Nim finally relented. “I don’t know though if we should try to find him. It’s dangerous transporting between worlds.” “My concern is if he’s alive still after all this time, could Nor’than be too?” Ann asked. “The trolls on Andy’s world had his plans for that weapon, but Lyra never used it. We never even saw it. “The trolls we saw weren’t anyone I knew, but I’d say they were non-ranking and expendable. Lyra didn’t send those out unsupervised. “I believe that we need to investigate this, but we can’t follow through with his request until you’re at full strength again,” Nim said. Ann nodded. “Agreed. That’s why I haven’t said anything more about it.” “Who have you spoken to about this?” “Just Pt’this and Andy.” “Sapphire knows too,” Pt’this said. “How about Emeton?” “I haven’t said anything to him,” Ann answered. “I didn’t either. I figured it would be better to get more information,” Pt’ this added. “I have an idea on a way to do some checking ahead of time without drawing attention to us or it being obvious to anyone,” Nim said. “Pt’this told me you wanted to try to contact Andy’s parents to invite them to the wedding.” Ann looked at Pt’this. “How did you know?” “Your mother asked me if I knew anyone who could help.” “This is supposed to be a surprise for Andy. Did she tell you that?” “She did.” Pt’this nodded. “You didn’t relay that part to me,” Nim said. “You never come to Sen-gan. How would you tell him? And now you know. But what does this have to do with finding Mishtali?” “Scrying Mishtali directly maybe dangerous. It may alert Nor’than to us. This is the perfect reason to go to Andy’s world. Ann and I go to pick up his parents. I can try to contact Mishtali telepathically. I’ll know if he blocks me. We’ll bring back Andy’s parents. You guys get married. Ann recovers. Then, if I contact him, we go and find Mishtali.” “How will we get there?” Ann asked. “We’ll have to use the gate. If this is some kind of trap, I doubt Nor’than will spring it without everyone coming,” Nim reasoned. “How can we contact Andy’s parents?” Ann asked. “Scry them,” Nim said. “To a different world? Does that work?” She had thought about it but didn’t know if it would work. “It’s not as simple as a normal scrying spell but it can be done, and I do know how to do it,” Nim said. “How do you know so much about other worlds when most people don’t even realize they exist?” Pt’this asked. “Did you forget my first mentor was an immortal? She taught me a great deal aside from magic.” Nim smiled. “Can you do the spell twice? Andy’s parents don’t live together,” Ann asked. “I’ll need to rest some in between, but I should be able to do it.” Nim nodded. “How long will Bob take?” “I can ask him to take his time,” Nim offered. “Maybe he can check Andy’s eyesight,” Ann suggested. All mages have the ability to see magic using mage sight. Andy’s mage sight had started on its own when he came to this world. However, no one had been able to figure out how to switch his sight back to normal vision. “Ann, Shunati is one of the best healers around. If he can’t figure it out, it’s doubtful Bob will,” Pt’this pointed out. “But it will keep Andy busy.” “You could also use some of my magic if needed,” Pt’this offered. “We worked well together before.” “Yet you still didn’t realize I was an Augmenter.” “You had that ring.” “Right, a ring that can imitate all Augmenter abilities. If such a thing could exist, why would immortals go through the trouble of capturing Augmenters?” “I just never thought it through. I never wondered why we worked well together.”
