Description

Joanne woke with a sore head and cotton-mouth. She tried to remember the night before. Had she gone out drinking? No, Nim hadn’t wanted to go out. No, wait. That was two nights ago. She didn’t even remember seeing Nim after work last night. Where was he? Where was she? Why was she on the floor? She could tell the room was dark even without opening her eyes. She could feel her keys in her pocket. She had a small flashlight on the key chain. Carefully, Joanne opened her eyes. She sat up slowly wary of her head. The pain was already fading, and moisture was returning to her mouth. She looked around. The room was dark, but not entirely. She could see shapes, silhouettes, and where the door was. She went to it and touched it cautiously. When nothing bad happened, she tried the knob. Of course, it was locked. She noticed there were metal bands around her wrists and neck. Copper most likely. It wouldn’t affect her, but it might hinder a rescue attempt. “Awake already? You humans never cease to amaze me.” It was the voice from the phone calls. The door opened, and a bright light shone in. Reflexively, she took a step back. The light entered the room, and so did the owner of the voice. The light faded some so she could see. She recognized Nathan North. The few times she’d seen him doing business with her parents, he’d given her the chills. Heartless is what Nim had called Drepal. Heartless and soulless was how she’d describe this man. “It’s nice to put a face to the voice, Jo. It’s been so long since I’ve seen you. I can see why the dragon likes you so much. Oh, don’t worry. I have no desires of that nature. I had enough trouble with my daughter and her mother. Both are gone now, and I do believe I’m well rid of them.” “I knew you’d help me find him. It was only a matter of time. I saw the way you two looked at each other when you were at the gate. I knew a bond would a form eventually, and you’d lead him here. “It’s too bad Thailyn is no longer around. He would’ve made an added incentive to get that wyrm to cooperate. He’s becoming increasingly difficult. But the elf should do nicely. With him keeping the Augmenter in working condition, I’ll have so much more power from that black wyrm, they’ll never be able to stop me. His albino mage friend served her purpose. She would’ve been a nice addition, but she’s too unstable.” Joanne said nothing. She worked on staying calm. She hoped the bond was too weak, that Nim wouldn’t find her. She knew she’d die if he didn’t come, but she would die if he was captured and he’d be forced to use his abilities in unspeakable ways. He had said that would injure him. He didn’t say how but the young dragons at the wedding had told her transferring too much energy could burn someone. Most likely that was it. What Nor’than would do would burn him. That’s why he needed a healer. And it probably wouldn’t do Mishtali any good either. “You still don’t understand, do you? Did he teach you nothing?” Nor’than snorted with disgust and walked out taking the light with him. Joanne waited a bit after the footsteps faded. Then she pulled her phone and her keys from her pocket. There was no cell signal, but the phone was fully charged, and it also had a flashlight. She took the pendant and broke it. Silver liquid poured out. In the fluid, she saw a myriad of images. “Nim?” She called. “Nim, are you there?” “Who are you?” A gruff voice said. “I was looking for Nimitinas,” she said, startled. “Kar, wait! That’s Nim’s mate!” Another voice said.
