Description

“I have a package here,” Joanne said as she came in from work the next night. “It’s for Mr. and Mrs. Mathis and Mr. and Mrs. va Idadubeju-Aqiemod.” “What?” Pt’this asked. “Did I say that wrong?” Joanne asked. “Surprisingly, no. But what is it? And why does it have my name on it?” “It’s a package, and it’s addressed to you and Sapphire. It’s from Colorado.” “Colorado?” That caught Andy’s attention. “Who’s Colorado?” Pt’this asked. “It’s a place, not a who. It’s where my parents live,” Andy explained. He took the package and found Ann and Sapphire. In the box were two thick envelopes. One had his and Ann’s name on it, and one had Pt’this and Sapphire’s name. He handed Sapphire that one and gave theirs to Ann to open. Ann opened it. It was photos of the wedding. “How did they get these?” “You didn’t see the cameras?” Joanne asked. “No. Did you?” She turned to Andy. “No. I can’t believe it,” Andy said. “Who took these?” He asked showing the ones of them heading to Thorgrey. “I took those two,” Joanne said. “I think your friend with the pregnant wife took the others.” “I can see Rejenn handling a camera,” Andy said. The others crowded around. They passed around the pictures. Nim moved close to Joanne. She thought she could feel something from him through the bond, but it was too faint to identify. She put an arm around him and smiled. He smiled back, but it was a sad smile. She didn’t ask what was wrong. She knew he wouldn’t tell her. The phone rang. “Do you want me to get that?” Shunati offered. He was the closest. “Please. Press the talk button first.” Ann said. “Hello?” He said imitating Andy’s accent. “I’m sorry, what?” He was having trouble hearing over everyone talking about the pictures. “One moment.” “Ann, I think he asked for you.” He handed her the phone. “Hello?” Ann said. “No, this is just Ann. Not Joanne. Who is this?” “No, I don’t think so. You can talk to me,” Ann said. Andy looked up. He handed the photos to Tylan. Pt’this looked at him questioningly. “I think Ann might need a nap before dinner, possibly a drink too.” Pt’this nodded understanding. He looked at Nim who just kept looking through the pictures. “Let’s go for a walk. It’s not as hot today, and I’d like to see more of your world,” Nim suggested when they finished the stack. Joanne looked up. “Okay, let me change first.” “You look good in that,” Nim said. “These shoes are not for walking.” She held her foot so he could see the heel of the shoe. It was at least as tall as his hand was wide. “Why do you wear those?” He asked. They looked okay, but he figured they couldn’t be easy to walk in. “I like them,” Joanne said. “And they make me taller.” Nim shook his head. “Go change.” A short time later they were gone. “She should let Joanne know,” Pt’this said. “Ann isn’t the only one who doesn’t want anyone else to know. This is one of the few things they both agree on.” “What’s going on? Why is Drepal awake?” Emeton asked. “Something with that phone call,” Andy said. They looked at Shunati. “I could barely hear him. I’m not even sure he asked for Ann,” he said apologetically. Drepal laughed. “Oh, she didn’t betray you. She was going to, but I killed her first. You boys left me a nice pile of rocks for that. I wouldn’t trust Thilgat though. He still has her brand. He’ll follow her last orders.” “For all the times he failed her, I’m surprised he’s still alive. He let us escape didn’t he?” she said. “An immortal and a dragon? I like a challenge, but I’m afraid the battle won’t be mine… Who? Why should I tell you that?” She laughed again. “Settle down, or you’ll piss him off,” Andy whispered. She turned her back on him. “Then what good is a dragon? … I know about immortals. I know that ability is limited. You’ll be hampered by the eta-vie too. I’ll tell you what, you tell me where you are, and I’ll come fight you rather than send someone stronger.” She looked at the phone. “He hung up.” She looked dismayed. “What did he say?” Emeton asked. “Not much. He wanted to talk to Joanne. He knew who I was, or he thought he knew. I didn’t correct them. He bragged a bit.” “So, nothing useful?” Andy surmised. “The emissary was right. Grandpa is collared and, if free, would help us instead of Nor’than.” “Any idea where he is?” Drepal didn’t answer. “Drepal?” Andy asked. “I’m not familiar with this place. I was asleep the last time. I was asking Ann.” “And?” “And, she says its downtown. She thinks we can find him if we scry.” “I’d still like to hold off on that,” Emeton said. “There’s a possibility he’ll detect us. Give Tani a chance to find him first.” Drepal nodded. “I’m sorry. I didn’t find out more.” Emeton nodded. “You weren’t expected to. You interrogate, not investigate.” She nodded again.
