Description

I always distinguish between envy and jealousy: both are generated by the wish to have something [wealth, power, respect, love] which somebody else is perceived to have. Envy, however, does not have to be malicious, nor does it require ill-will towards the envied. Often envy can be the father of ambition, motivation and drive and have a positive effect - a kick up the rear, so to speak. Envy is based on real differences between the envier and the 'lucky one' Jealousy may start as envy, but can easily be based on trivial, imagined or untrue perceived differences. The envied is seen as a thief or at the very least completely unworthy of his/her good fortune. Hatred and malice are there in abundance and more often than not turn inwards in an orgy of self-destruction. JEALOUSY Beneath the honeysuckle hedge, web-woven from the hammer-head hole to the spokes wheeled outwards all of a spinning spiral in a scattered multiplicity of a myriad mad my selves: compacted personae in a dire display of shattered vitreous images. All eyes, flies' eyes, spiders' eyes, glint and glimmer; while we linger and listen to a voice reminiscent of a trod treadle Singer sewing machine stitching, stitching ... "I have woven my own web of despair I, the spider I, the fly" Mosaic hedgerow light moves no more: fades, fades gives way to anti-light, to dark ... and with a leap, race, quick my athlete's mind is slick again; kicked alive, stirring screwed anger, sifting remorse. But in these broken mirror shards gum tears cannot spill fill instead the dank abyssal well of empty bed and bored unease ... [Ah, no ... not bored, No! Not sad, No!] With ersatz serenity and feckless reckless reason I seal my captivity and devour myself.

I have been envious many times in my life, and will probably be so many times more. I have been jealous only once [a long time ago] - and the process taught me that it is an emotion to be avoided at all costs. It almost destroyed me.

I imagine everyone has moments of envy, as the grass does seem greener when viewed from a distance, but jealousy really is a green monster that devours a person with hatred that ultimately turns inward. Great writing. CC

Beautiful words Mike, and you are right, jealousy is an emotion that has often killed and been suffered by so many. IMO Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom, have a great weekend!

So well described. Now that I am older, jealousy and envy seem to have faded in intensity. Neither one has done my any good in the past.

I never really thought about the difference of these two words/emotionsin fact have probably used them interchangeably, all the while knowing there is a very BIG difference. I thank the stars I've gotten thru life without letting either of them ruin me; it could've been so easy. And your line, "feckless reckless reason", wow~it could not be any better!!

Very true writing Mike. I agree with what you said. Envy is different, can definately be non-malicious in nature. Jealousy on the other hand usually comes from several emotional issues, (I think, "just my opinion" ;) ) Part of it stems from insecurity and part of it stems from the intent to control the object of our desire, which as we of some years, know is impossible.

Well conceived and beautifully written. You hit the nail so squarely on the head in your last stanza; given the subject matter, those last few lines are an incredible, exquisitely true observation. "I seal my captivity/and devour/myself" Brilliant!!!

I lost my last vestiges of jealousy sitting on a beach many years ago with one lovely lass before me closer to the water on the right and one in the dry sand to the left. As a saw nipped out the kerf in the middle of my brain the shards of a green dragon were shredded to nothing. Why had I believed it? Was avoidance of emnbarrassment so important I relaxed into comfort?

Jealousy has such an out-of-conrol feel about it. Your poem says it very well! Such helpless self sabotage. You have a way of shedding light, my friend.
